Spark Plug Question

Post by ebslopp »

Ok...I know this is a website for Vibes, but I'm hoping someone knows the answer to this. I have a Ford ZX2 that I recently changed the spark plugs on. The emissions sticker said the spark plugs should have a gap of 1.3mm. So I gapped the new plugs to 1.3mm and installed them. I started the car and it ran like crap. I checked the gaps on the old plugs and they were like 1.6mm!!! I gapped the new plugs to 1.6mm and installed them. Started the car and it ran good. Does anybody have any idea why this would be? There are no mods to the car, it's 100% stock. Is the emissions sticker wrong?

What type of sprak plug did you install? The manual tells me to refer to the emissions sticker for the proper gap. I used titanium plugs. They are required for this car.

actually, I got them from Autozone. You're correct, they do come pre-gapped. But they were pre-gapped to 1.3mm.

Maybe its a quirk in your engine? The emissions sticker should be correct, and should supercede info in any manual since it is supposedly up to date with the latest info as of the build date of the car. If it runs good at 1.6, just go with it and ignore the sticker.
