HAMILTON TOWNSHIP — If you think that paying $1.70-something for a gallon of regular gasoline is tough, try paying $458.28 for 18 self-service gallons of water.Such was the plight of Jerry Joseph Daignault, 18, of Saylorsburg.Daignault, according to a report from the office of District Justice Jolana Krawitz, in Saylorsburg, drove his 1990 Pontiac Firebird up to a Hamilton Township home with a 300-gallon gas tank in the driveway and helped himself to what he thought was 18 gallons of fuel. The victim of the crime, who's name is not provided in the report, saw the theft occurring and yelled at Daignault to get off the property and that he was calling the police. At this point Daignault, who was probably getting close to a full tank, took off. Even with a freshly filled tank, Daignault only made it a short distance from the scene of the gas-snatching. The Firebird seized up and refused to continue its flight.Unbeknownst to Daignault and very well-known to the victim, the tank had been full of water. The victim was sick of gas thieves siphoning his fuel, so he had filled the tank with water.Meanwhile, the victim had chased Daignault, knowing that water was a poor source of fuel, and caught up with the disabled vehicle. The victim told Daignault why his car wasn't working and told him the police were on the way. Indeed, they arrived shortly thereafter.Daignault admitted that he had taken the gas/water and that he didn't have permission to do so. In court, he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct but the charges of theft by unlawful taking and loitering and prowling at nighttime both were withdrawn.According to the report, Daignault was ordered to pay fines and costs of $458.28
