2005 Lotus Elise

Post by MJN2 »

http://www.detnews.com/2004/au...8.htm Nice looking car. Looks like a blast to drive, but this kind of bothers me:Quote, originally posted by Article »The lightweight Elise weighs under 2,000 pounds and is outfitted with a 1.8-liter dual-overhead cam I-4 engine made by Toyota Motor Co.p. that makes 190 horsepower at 7,800 rpm and 138 pounds-feet of torque at 6,800 rpm. It is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Sounds like the engine from a Vibe GT/Matrix XRS, just tweaked a bit. I could be wrong though

You are correct my friend. Now lets find out how they got the extra ponies out of the motor to benefit the GT owners among us.

A semi-educated guess would be improved intake & exhaust.

I thought I read some where that they retuned the 2ZZ so that lift occurs more smoothly and also it kicks in earlier and has a higher redline for some new car. I forgot which car it was for, possibly the new Elise. Sure is a nice car!

Yeah, it is a nice looking car. Not sure I'd pay $40k for it though.

From what I hear it is an extreme adrenaline rush to drive it. I think it weighs the same as a geo metro. With that power to weight ratio it would have to be fun. Just imagine if a Gt Vibe weighed almost 1000lbs. less.

0-to-60 in 4.9 seconds with a top speed of 150 miles per hour, and it only weighs 1975lbs.Sounds like fun to me

Very true. But how many young, inexperienced drivers can afford a $40k car?

$40K is cheap for a luxury sports car like that. If I didn't just buy the Vibe, I'd consider it. The only problem is you wouldn't want to drive that during a Wisconsin winter so I'd have to get a winter beater. I wonder what insurance goes for on that car?

One high school I went to (attended 3 total..blah. life of a military brat), was in an upper-middle class area, and a lot of kids drove 'Stang GTs, Z28's, and Corvettes to school. I remember one girl I had a couple of classes with getting dropped off by her dad every morning in a brand new Rolls Royce.

What young driver can afford it? A student at UB just bought a brand new BMW 6 series, which is a $70K dollar car. His parents must have deep pockets! As for the Elise, it is a sweet car but does seem a tad expensive. There is no questioning its performance, but $40K will buy an awful lot of performance in a number of competitors cars. For that kind of money, I would hope for an engine that is a little more exotic than one from a $20-$25k Toyota, even if power levels were about the same.

Could pick up a brand new 'Stang Cobra Coupe for about $5k less and a convertible for about $2-3k less, as an example, and it's 0-60 time is the same. Plus, you get that wonderful V-8+supercharger sound coming from it
