Short ram install problem. Need Help!

Post by rocstar »

I finally got all my parts from Cosmo for my short ram. They are just about to come out with a short ram, and I got a pre-production model. I had to fabricate a support bracket and buy a few other small parts. I got it installed and it worked great for 5 minutes. Then I got the CEL. I ran for a while with the CEL and the car worked great!I then pulled the battery cable and reset the CEL, but ever since then my engine has been running really rough and the car sounds like it is wheezing really bad, almost like it can't get enough air through the (new) filter. HELP!!

hoses are hooked up wrong somewhere...i had the same problem...but w/ some even stranger details....under the hood somewhere there is a diagram of how the hoses fit in the stock setup....might be on the underside of the hood.....study that carefully...i almost guarantee you reversed a couple of the hoses. If it helps then put it back to stock and then use tape to flag the hoses and there connections and then match that up when u put the intake system back in.

This is a base Vibe so there is only 1 vacuum hose. I reinstalled the stock unit and the car works fine now. I'm not sure I want to go back to the short ram.

Make sure the only vacuum hose you disconnected is the one on the stock airbox...Don't disconnect anything from the OBD canister or the VSV...jhust the one hose from the box. Then try again...

I only disconnect one hose from the stock air box and reconnected it on the Cosmo. I couldn't have screwed that up.The only thing that I can figure is that the pre-production model didn't have a hose attachment at first. They sent me a rubber grommet and hose nipple which I had to drill and insert in the body of the ram tube. The vacuum may have been disrupted due to this, but I don't think so. It shouldn't matter if you have a welded hose fitting or not, should it?I know that Cosmo is trying to develop a new product here, so I offered to work with them to test it. Testing isn't going well...

Maybe you installed the mass air flow sensor reversed. Make sure it is facing the same way as stock.

Yep, did that. I made sure it was the same way on the Cosmo and back on the stock unit.

I have a K & N Typhoon short ram, it came with all brackets and hardware and was easy to install. Very impressed with power gains, and no C.E.L's after 5000km. Cost me $190.CDN.

You will get significantly more HP gain witha CAI than a short ram. The short ram picks up super heated air from above the engine, according to MadBill as much as 55 degrees hotter than outside. Colder air produces more HP.

I tried something tonight that was interesting. I took the filter off of the short ram. The engine sounded perfect with no pulsing or wheezing. Could the filter be the problem? It's new, but maybe it is causing too much of a pressure drop? I could try buying an off the shelf filter and trying that.

I think I may have read about a problem on here where someone had too much oil on the filter and it caused some problems. Is your filter a reusable one that requires oiling? If so, it may either be lacking oil or have too much.

hook your filter up to a vacuum for a little while and turn the vacuum on.

I installed my AEM short intake and it was simple except for the extra vaccum hose plug i have not had and CEL's its been about 6k miles. has anyone seen any signifigant increase in hp torque with the cai over the short? I have read that AEM found none...
