Have you read any good books lately?

Post by drb22 »

Not sure how many of you are readers, but I can't stand to be without a good book. This past weekend I read Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, by Cory Doctorow. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ ... 18-5558324 I really enjoyed it. It was the first Scifi novel I have read in a long time and I couldn't help letting my mind wonder about some of the "what if"s it presented. Plus it was set in Disney World which is kind of cool.So come on all you readers - what do you recommend for a good read?

Book? What is this thing you call, Book?Just kidding....But seriously. In the last 10 years I have read only a couple of novels, all by relatives When I lived in the bush before the internet was invented, I inhaled Asimov, Adams, Le Carre, and other Sci Fi and Mysteries. Since the computer came along and the house, all I read is technical stuff.

quote:In the last 10 years I have read only a couple of novels, all by relatives ...and by me on this site, LOL .The last full book I read I finished almost a year and a half ago. "Hating Whitey and Other Progressive Causes" by David Horowitz. Fascinating views on race relations in the US by a Jewish man who was a former member of the Black Panther Party and is now nationally outspoken on racial issues.I currently am reading two books in the precious little spare time I have while in college. The first is Benjamin Franklin's Autobiography. I don't know if ever there was a man so full of practical wisdom. The other is a newer New York Times best seller, "An American Life". It is Ronald Reagan's Autobiography. A truely amazing, bold, passionate, yet profoundly caring man. He effectively negotiated a peaceful end to the Cold War that loomed over us for 40 years without giving up American soverignty and seldom gets credit for it. He also laid the groundwork for one of the greatest periods of American economic prosperity in our history. An imperfect, yet great leader.

I just finished two Tony Horowitz novels. Both were excellent. One, "Blue Latitudes" delt with the voyages of Captain Cook(CC). In one chapter, we were taken along on the voyages through CC's eyes. In the next chapter, Tony and his drunk friend Roger visit the same islands, he then grills them about CC. In "Bagdhad without a Map" it recalls Tony's travels throughout all of the Middle East. Well, through all those backwards Muslim countries anyway. I highly recommend both books.

Wow, English Lit degree and you are recommending Tom Clancy? Just joking, I have read all of his books. I'd recommend Vince Flynn if you like Tom Clancy. For all you sports illustrated types - Harlan Coben has a great series of mysteries centered around a sports agent - think Arliss with mystery and attitude. Jeff Long has a couple of really good books out that would be enjoyed by the Stephen King fan, and by a lot of other people as well. Shakespeare's plays - when I read Shakespeare I am so amazed at how his work is able to transcends the time and place they were written - they can compare well to world events today. And far as other "Literature" goes, I can not get enough Tolstoy, Joyce, or Pynchon.

I thought I would refresh this thread.I just picked up "Glorious Appearing, the final chapter of those left behind"I am not a religious person. with that stated I would recommend this series to all. My wife bought me the first book for x-mas a few years back thinking it was a science fiction book. I read it and was hooked now the 12th and last book is out and the adventure is coming to an end. read a book! let your brain take a vacation

The book I am currently reading is called Sea Hunters II by Clive Cussler. This one is Nonfiction about his true stories about surveying shipwrecks. It is a great book because along with his real stories he creates a short story of his own making on what might have happened to the ship. It isn't as good as his first Sea Hunters book, but still a good read. His fiction books are the absolute best. If you like action adventure defenately check him out.

Just finished "In Deadly Combat", it's the memoirs of a German soldier in WWII on the Eastern Front. Excellent, but a bit dry, read if history is your thing.

"Rule By Secrecy" by Jim Marrsthis is a really interesting non-fiction book, and a must read. you'll learn a lot about world history and how the people with money (rockerfellers, jp morgan, carnegie, etc.) and secret societies (skull & bones, masons, knights templar, etc.) have influenced world events.

I'm currently rereading The Woods Out Back by R.A. Salvatore, as well as the second book of the Cleric Quintent, by the same author coincidently. However, I spend more of my time writing literature than reading it

Finally, a thread i can really get into!Right now I have the Fellowship of the Ring in my backpack, Tolkien is the man! Also have going; sorta neverending since I have been reading it for months and just haven't sat down to finish it; A Wind In the Door, Madeline L'Engle. Love her books. Of course, no one can leave out Stephen King, ultimate storyteller, as well as Clive Barker- The Great and Secret Show has to be one of the most intriguing, fascinating, terrifying reads I have ever had the pleasure of enjoying. Manhattan Nocturn is another great read.. I can't remember the author's name right now though. Man, there are just so many good books out there. Pick up any book and let your imagination run wild.Oh yes I cannot leave out, and laugh if you want but I think they are great, The Harry Potter series.. Book 6 is due out in December.

Anyone read the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind? I really enjoyed it. Great fantasy series. I tried to read LOTR, but honestly, I just couldn't get into it. Maybe I should skip the first few chapters and try again.

I'm a fan of the Harry Potter series. I read book #1 with my daughter. In the middle of book #2, she got a little too scared. I continued reading - I've finished book #4. Need to get #5.I'm also a fan of John Grisham. I've read all of his "legal" books (not Skipping Christmas or the other one) except the last two.If there is anybody out there who liked the "Left Behind" series, may I recommend "This Present Darkness" - a very good book.

"The Coming Global Superstorm" by Art Bell and Whitley Strieber.this is a pretty good book about the history of the earth's climate and what could be in store for us in the near future if analysis of present climate conditions are even remotely correct.it's a quick read.
