gas here is hovering around 1.70 as well. if it goes up to 3, i wont be able to afford to live, literally!

Here the price jumps from $1.75 - $2.18 US per US gallon from one day to the next and then back down again just as fast. Some days the price is $1.75 in Gatineau, Quebec and if you drive 1 mile across the bridge to Ottawa, Ontario, it's $2.18 or vice versa. It can make a difference of $8.00 or so when I'm filling my pick-up truck.

Just bought gas tonight, $1.81 a gallon, that is down from this past weekend. It was up to $1.99.

Not another refinery problem! They have been blaming high prices on low refinery capacity for a long time. Thats certain to have some sort of impact. PS: Prices around here lately have been between $1.81 and 1.89 per for regular.

Seems like they always blame refinery problems for high gas price. You have to start wondering how much of it is true.The gas price has actually gone down (very slowly) for two weeks now in Southern California and it costs now $2.17 for 87 octane at a station by my house. It is ridiculous...

Gas prices are not that high. Adjusted for inflation gas is still inexpensive. The true highest gas prices on record were in the late 1980's. Adjusted for inflation gas was over $2.80/gallon. Still - glad I own a Vibe While gas prices are rising, partially due to capacity and reduced supply from OPEC it should be noted that US and especially Chinese demand has increased over recent years. Remember basic economics - increased demand = increased prices.Let's not forget the varying environmental regulations for different regions - why we can't have a country wide standard (even it it reflects the most stringent standards today), I'll never know. A standardized regulation would allow refineries to be much more efficient and allow shipping to any areas where supply is low.ANyway at least we don't live in Europe where gas is anywhere from $6-8/gallon!!

Maybe if the prices stay, it will keep stupid big useless vehicles off the road (i.e. Hummers). I don't understand why soccer moms think they need a friggin Hummer. There is one that commutes on the same interstate as me everyday. I hate to think what she spends on gas!!! I have to fill my tank every four days. Easy now... As much as I would never buy any of those BIG SUVs, this is still a free country and everyone is entitle to drive the vehicle of their choice. I would not like it if someone tells me that I should sell my Vibe and use public transportation only.Like one comedian said once "Everyone who drive faster than you are maniacs and everyone who drive slower than you are a**ho**s."

My 2cents worth.Just remember that we are sitting here complaining about the price of gas while drinking our $1.00 per 500ml bottle of water or $2.00 per grande coffee. Gas really is not that bad when you compare it to other things that we buy.

last week 93 octane was about $1.99-$2.03 a gallon here in Cleveland,Oh. Pretty soon i'm going to have to slow down. lol.

Regular 87 octane was US$1.67 a gallon on 03/31 here in the suburbs. In Indianapolis, it's ususally 10-20 cents per gallon higher. One local station usually raises the prices by 15-20 cents on Wednesday nights every week, only to come down on Friday afternoon. I think the person working those shifts doesn't like to be too busy! Edit: 4/1/04 87 octane was $1.79 Tonight 4/2/04 it's down to $1.75!

The gasoline fiasco is alive and well in Northern Ontario Canada. Our prices here are 84.9 cents Canadian per litre which equals $3.40 Canadian per U.S. gallon. That translates to about $2.61 U.S. per U.S. gallon. Don't know if anyone has previously mentionned in this thread but if not suggest that you have a look.

All the gas I have purchased so far in 2004 has been free. I have a Shell Mastercard that gives you a 5% rebate on Shell gas, and 1% on all other purchases. The rebates are redeemed on Shell gasoline. I charge a lot of stuff on that card (groceries, phone bill, Ohio State football tickets, Scott's lawncare etc.) and pay the balance in full every month.

Gas prices are a touchey subject. I irritates me when I see people on the news saying how horrible the gas price is, but still drive the same amount or in many cases even more. Gas is a necessary evil that we must all live with like the Yankees in the World Series and meals from Mcdonalds. There really isn't a way around it in the near future, no matter how many countries we invade and how many people bitc h to Dan Rather. The only way we can get rid of this problem is to make sure that every possible law, bill, and project involving alternative fuels is passed and approved by the government. And by getting more cars to fill up with Ethanol blended fuels.

You would have thought that the oil/gasoline shortages of 30 years ago would have prompted more efforts in that time to develop alternate energy sources and better fuel efficiency. I'm 61 and I suppose I'll be dead before it happens, but I'd bet this old Earth's oil ain't going to last too much longer than another 30 years especially as other nations like China catch up economically to the U.S. and start using more and more of this precious resource. Bush is full of s--t on thinking that we can drill our way out of this problem. We should have saved the Alaskan oil until the Saudi's ran out. And the liberals are also full of it when they opposed nuclear power plants. I still remember one of my favorite bumper stickers "Nuclear energy - safer than Ted Kennedy's car!". There is no damn reason people should be driving Hummers that get 10 mpg at best. The gas guzzler tax should apply to individual vehicles, not administered on the basis of a manufacturer's total output. And the tax ought to swing both ways - credits for vehicles that get better than "x" miles per gallon, and debits for cars that get less than "x" miles per gallon.

What irks me is those movie stars who get 20 million per picture making a grand entrance at some gala event wearing borrowed clothes and jewellery and driving an eco-friendly hybrid loaned by the manufacturer, then blatting on about doing their part for the environment. Meanwhile back home their 30,000 square foot mansion for two is sucking up as much power as some small towns...

yeah.. it seems really convenient that OPEC says they are going to reduce output by 1 million barrels a day, and then russia sees an opportunity to make some money, so they say they will release more oil, then there are 2 refinery "explosions". hmmmm. sounds like they were going to raise gas prices no matter what.there are 400Million gallons of gas sold in the US every day, so a one cent rise in prices = $4M extra profit a day!. and we all know gas doesn't go up by one cent. but it does come down one cent at a time. i never understood that.prices around here went down to $1.71 for one day, then jumped back up to $1.79 (regular).

Even at $2 a gallon, gasoline is a bargain. We need to use tax policy to encourage conservation. I'd like to see a 50 cent per gallon federal conservation tax. That would be balanced by a tax credit of whatever it takes to return that money to the taxpayers. Example, using a base of 12,000 rmiles per year in a vehcile with a 20 mpg that would 600 gal x 50 cents = $300. If you drove a car fewer miles and/or with greater mileage you'd make money. If you drove a Hummer for 18,000 miles you would be paying a net of $600 extra for that privilege. There ought to be a tax on ordinary light bulbs with the revenue used to subsidize the sale of the fluorescent bulbs that use 75% less energy. Ditto on CRT monitors - with the tax used ot subsidize energy efficient LCD's. We tax alcohol and tobacco to discourage consumption. Likewise we shoudl use taxes to discourage use of energy wasteful goods.

I know it is hard to believe that a gas station does not make much, if any money on sales of gasoline. However, I do not have a hard time believing that after speaking frankly with a local gas station operator that I trust is telling the truth. At best, margins hover at about 5 to 6 cents a gallon. When I see a station in a particular area at 1.69 9/10 and the prices elsewhere are generally 1.79 9/10 I truly believe that the 1.69 9/10 price is due to localized competition and that it is a bargain. In Columbus, OH BP seems to be the price setter, everyone else follows. I get the impression that they use weekday price variences to keep their inventories flowing. Gasoline probably tends to back up in the system early in the week. I get the impression that there is not a great amount of storage capacity. Smart consumers will time their purchases accordingly. When I was in the milk business and someone asked how much it cost to produce a gallon milk I had to answer "I really don't know". A lot depends on how you allocate your fixed costs. Economists define perfect competition as when everyone sells at their marginal cost. Fixed costs never get covered. That maximizes short run cash flow but in the long run everyone goes bankrupt becasue they cannot cover the fixed costs.

There is a hope by the liberals that high gas prices will bring down the SUV, and everyone will buy fuel efficient hybrids instead. They are partially right. People will buyhybrids if gas prices go really high. But they will buy SUV hybrids, because they either need or want an SUV.Right now everyone equates Hybrids to economy cars.... the Prius, Insight etc. By next year there will be a Lexus 330RX and Toyota Highlander Hybrid, Ford Escape Hybrid, and Chevy/GMC full size truck hybrids.The hybrid powertrain is going to save the SUV, but thankfully it will save some gas too!As for the celebs who like to show up in their green cars, not only are there houses eating up tons of resources, they probably have 2 Caddilac Escalades, a Lincoln Navigator, a Ferrari, and a few other less than efficient vehicles in their 20 car garage!

I'd buy a hybrid, if the hybrid SUV selection was better, I'd buy one. More & more models are coming out every year so it's just a matter of time. I'd personally like to see a one time tax deduction of a few thousand dollars for buying a hybrid....yes I had to pay taxes today
