Silverstars: Goodbye, not Good buy.

Well, I noticed on the way into work yesterday morning that my low beam burned out on one of my silverstars. This is the 2nd pair I have purchased. The first pair lasted about 6 months, and this pair lasted about 9 months. I think they lasted a little longer this time because I disabled the DRL just after putting the 2nd set in.I liked the silverstars, but not enough to pay another $40 for another pair. Going back to regular bulbs.

My high beam has been out for about a month. I refuse to replace the bulb for one beam. Since my lows are on anytime there's oncoming traffic, not likely to get noticed by the police. The other bulb still lights the road enough that I can get away with it too. Will use up the supply I have and find better replacements. Maybe euro silverstars.BTW -- Ironic, i saw a commerical for silverstars the other day. I laughed.

I too, was affected by the Silverstar Replacement Syndrome. Replaced two headlight bulbs. When that last one blew, I chose to buy a pair of Xtravisions which were priced about the same as one Silverstar. To be honest with you, I couldn't really tell that much of a difference between the Xtravisions in the headlights and the Silverstars I had in the fogs, as far as brightness/whiteness goes. Obviously, they do give a different output, but there was nothing my untrained eye could detect.Kept the two Silverstars in the fogs until blew at the same time, and then switched to plain ol' 9006's.The lighting is good enough for me...

Replaced one pair of headlight silverstars, foglights have been in since the day after I got the car last July. Have a pair of the Eurolite Plasma's in my fiancee's GrandAm, seem to be going strong, but have only been in for a month.I like the light the silverstars put out. It's a fairly unique "White" compared to most of the other aftermarket bulbs. I'm never going to put in "plain ol" bulbs again, because the color is just too dark for me.. Not enough light... I love the color and brightness of the silverstars, but the reliability is becoming an issue...If only I could afford true HID...maybe that would last a BIT longer..

Yeah, I haven't had any fog issues except hte one the dealer broke and the one I drove over. Seems to be just the double-filament bulbs that are dying?

Possible.. I disabled my DRLs in hope that they'll last longer. We shall see though. No issues with the hi-beams, just the lows. The last lo that blew didn't even look blown! I had to really stare at the thing before I saw where the filament had broken..

I had to replace both of my Silverstar headlights as well. But, Neal (champcaracing) helped me out this past weekend and disabled the DRL's. I am hoping that will conserve my bulbs a lot longer.

Depending on which way you do it (apparently there's like..three or four methods now...)I used the "cut and ground" method. The easiest way to do this..1) Remove the one screw on the bottom of the steering column cover.2) Turn the wheel to remove the two screws behind the wheel3) Gently pull the bottom of the column cover off, revealing the inner dash4) Look straight in and to the right, the box in front of you is the DRL module (You can pull it out carefully and check)5) Find the yellow wire going to the DRL module6) Cut said Yellow wire and splice another piece of wire to it (on the DRL box side)7) Ground said spliced wire to a conveinent piece of metal, I used a screw on the bottom of the steering column.8) Say goodbye DRLs!Someone can edit this if i'm wrong, i'm going from memory on how I did it about a month ago...

I did not take pictures of disabling the DRL's. I don't know if Neal has done that on another post. It was a matter of removing (no cutting or grounding required) of a wire from a harness. He may be able to do this at the Michigan meet. You have to remove the guages and then he can do it from there. You have to remove a red wire with a white stripe in position #12 on the harness. If you have any other questions, the best person to ask is champcaracing. He knows his stuff backwards and forwards about this topic.
