Marijuana

Post by ragingfish »

Quick question. Someone asked me today if Ontario had legalized the use of marijuana. I didn't know the answer, though I suspect it is true, because I remember hearing that. Can anyone confirm? Thanks.Note: just looking for a yay or nay here. Don't want this thread to turn into a fiasco on why marijuana should or should not be legalized, how good it is, etc. etc. etc. Let's keep it clean, this is a family show.

Latest update.Quote »Canada Plans Medical Marijuana ProjectSun Mar 21, 6:49 PM ET TORONTO - Canada plans to make government-certified marijuana available in local pharmacies, a move that would make it only the second country in the world to allow the direct sale of medical marijuana. Officials are organizing a pilot project in the British Columbia province modeled on a year-old program in the Netherlands. Currently, there are 78 medical users in Canada permitted to buy government marijuana, which is grown in Flin Flon, Manitoba. An ounce sells for about $113, and the marijuana is sent by courier to patients or their doctors. But the department is changing the regulations to allow participating pharmacies to stock marijuana for sale to approved patients without a doctor's prescription, similar to regulations governing so-called morning-after pills. Those emergency contraceptives can be obtained directly from a pharmacist without the need for a doctor's signature. A notice of the change is expected to be made public this spring, allowing for drugstore distribution later in the year. "We're just at the preliminary stages right now," said Robin O'Brien, a consulting pharmacist organizing the pilot project. "We're not quite sure how it's going to fit." The Canadian government also has suggested it may decriminalize marijuana, a move criticized by U.S. drug and border agencies, which threaten more intrusive searches of cross-border travelers. Some patients report that marijuana alleviates the pain and nausea associated with AIDS (news - web sites) and other diseases. But marijuana's status as a medicinal drug has not been formally approved, O'Brien said. "There's no pharmaceutical company that's going to come forward to take it through the regulatory process because they can't get a patent on it, so it's kind of a limbo drug," he said. The pilot project is slated for British Columbia because the province's college of pharmacists issued a groundbreaking statement last fall supporting the distribution of medical marijuana in pharmacies. Most health care organizations have opposed easier access.

The police in Canada are smart enough to not waste too much time arresting people for petty crimes like possesion of small amounts of pot. If you cause trouble, they may bust you to cause you more grief and get their point across but they won't go out of their way. They realize that busting large numbers of people for possesion would be a huge drain on resourses and would cost the courts way too much time and money for any possible benefit that they would achieve. The year is 2004, wake up and smell the sweet scent of the HERB man!!! I don't smoke pot but I don't condemn people who do. It is no worse than swilling a few BEER and causes our society a lot less heartbreak than mass alcoholism does.

Well maybe you don't mind but I certainly hate walking around in public with the stench of pot in the air and kids just sitting around all drugged up and no one is doing anything about it. Do you think its right that kids can pass around a joint only a few feet from a kids swingset with a couple of little ones playing on it, all this taking place in a public park? Happens here, its Woodstock reality, canadian style.

There's supposedly certain areas where you can actually grow pot (Even in the US) I believe it was in a Newsweek or Time or something, but the only real part of the States you could grow it in (albeit in small amounts) was parts of California and parts of Nevada.

Whether the substance is alcohol, cigarettes, marijuana, coffee, cocaine, etc., many of us like to alter our senses and feel good. All of the above can lead to negative health and social problems. Alcohol is accepted in our society because it is legal, even though the health problems, and related social/economic problems it causes are overlooked again because it is legal.

Everyone wants to talk about pot in terms of SMOKING it. There are negative side effects to smoking anything, not the least of which is the world's deadliest and most destructive drug, tobacco. I don't smoke pot, but every now and then I EAT it. Better, longer lasting in my opinion too. That also takes care of a lot of the complaints from the rightious crowd. As for the suggestion that THC affects the genitals, my experience has always been a positive effect.

Perhaps if we are to argue the evils or pleasantness of drugs, we should make a new post? He requested that he was only looking for a yes/no answer, and not preaching (Which includes, IMO, preaching for or against it). Not trying to (removed) anyone off, just saying.. >_>
