New Exhaust Installed Today

Post by Pappy »

Was set for a $600.00 PLUS cat back system. A friend who owns a muffler shop in Vista California BEGGED me to come in for a cheap fix for my need for some sound. Said he would fit a dozen different systems for FREE till I found what sound I wanted. Told him I wanted a DEEP smooth sound, NOT a hollow echo like sound or raspy. He swore all I needed was a simple muffler...NOTHING ELSE, BUT to try a Magna Flow. I did, he was right, Only $150.00 and too me it sounds bett than any "system" I ever heard! Just a tip, find a shop that isn't only after yer wallet! Now I have a VERY deep, mellow sound that I like better than my old Jag XKE. I can't believe this sound is from my lil Vibe.....Part #11234 . Aluminized 4x9 inch oval (stainless available).Mike

My Jegs order came today....I'm having a friend of mine who owns a muffler shop make up a bolt-on exhaust with a Hooker Aerochamber muffler, and a resonator tip. Now all I have to do is find the time to get over to his shop. Will post a follow-up when (if) it gets done. What diameter pipe did he use on yours? I am going with 2 1/4".See Ya,Carl

Just have the stock tip though....Does the resonator add loudness, echo or what? I assume I could add it if I wanted, but so far i am so thrilled I have no words...Mike[QUOTE]My Jegs order came today....

I can't remember the members name but a Vibe owner here had installed a Flowmaster 60 series muffler and loves it. I plan on going with a custom exhaust and Flowmaster muffler also. Nothing sounds like a Flowmaster and you wont lose any low end torque with it either like many other free flowing mufflers.Oh by the way the 60 series flowmaster is designed for use on small 4 and 6 cylinder engines. It's made for great sound and also to help enhance the low end torque and high RPM HP of these small engines.

I tried one on yesterday. Too tinny sounding to me. And at high RPM, too raspy to me also. I didn't drive it to experience any performance chages however? I only wanted a deep purr type sound like my old MG's and Jag's. Got it with this. Today, after more driving, I'm wondering if I should have gone bigger than the 9" to quiet it down a bit? Not sure yet. With the radio on and windows up, I think I can live with it....God, I'm gettin old. Mike

Well, I got mine made up and installed today. My experience with Hooker Aerochamber mufflers are that they tend to be rather loud, so I put on a tip made by Hooker (3 1/2", stock tip is 3") that is also a resonator to keep the note down a little, but this is even a little too quiet for me. I think if I did it again, I'd still get the Hooker tip (very nice quality), but without the resonator in it. Actually it's probably just the right sound. Any louder and it may bother the neighbors at 5:30am when I start the car up to warm up. If I can come up with some decent microphones, I'll make a couple *.wav's.

>Hey PappyI would like to hear a sound file of the Hooker set up too.Cant make up my mind between the GMD(georgemartindesign),orthe Flowmaster . I will have to agree with AdminII, you cant go wrong with a Flowmatser setup and it's a lot cheaper than the GMD Exhaust.I think it sounds pretty good :http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/web10 ... .htmlPappy, how high were you taking it up to when you thought it sounded tiny and raspy??Carl,Good Job,Looks good.Do you have any details on the Hooker Aerochamber.Performance etc..Everbody's help is great.

Kind of like me after Trish (the wife) kicked me in the nuts when I mentioned the supercharger and rims! Actually more like my V6 Toyota, I pesonally did NOT like it. [QUOTE]Kind of like me after Trish (the wife) kicked me in the nuts when I mentioned the supercharger and rims! ******************************************************That was the funniest thing I have heard all day, practicaly fell off my seat here in the office. I agree with you, our Vibes will sound different from the Acura. The only thing is that one of my cousins has the flowmaster on his Acura and it sounds a lot deeper than the soundbyte does.Go figure. So you say Magnaflow, I will have to check them out. Thanks Mike,-Marcos-

Does anyone know if flowmaster will make a bolt on cat back for the Vibe/Matrix? Like they have for other vehicle. I like flowmasters. I have dual 40's on my V6 GA and it sounds like a V8.

But for ME, on THIS car, I prefer the Magnaflow. I'm gonna have a yard sale to get rid of my Flowmaster and my Borla mufflers! I just love this lil wagon so much, I may end up needing another shrink....Mike

quote:Looks great. If ya ever get a sound file, post it! Carl,Good Job,Looks good.Do you have any details on the Hooker Aerochamber.Performance etc..Thanks, I'm happy with how it turned out. The Aerochamber is a very free flowing muffler. You can see a straight line of sight through the inlet and outlet, even though there are "chambers" in there. (I have an 85 Vette with AC's on it (no cats) with true duals, and it sounds VERY nice. A tad loud though.) Today was my first full daily drive with the AC on the Vibe, and I was hoping for a little more db out of it. You can definately tell it is not stock, and has a nice deep tone to it, but it is not too loud by any means. The tip I put on it does have some fiberglass packing inside it's baffles which I may be able to snag out of there to make it a little louder. Tonight was my wife's monthly "night out with the girls" (at least that's what she tells me), so I had to play Mr. Mom tonight for our 1 yr old, so I didn't have time to mess with the Vibe tonight, but I may see if I can loosen up and remove the tip I had them put on there and see how loud it is without it on there. As for free flowing, I don't see how you could make one with much less restriction. If I get time tomorrow, I'll try and make a couple sound files. The problem I have with sound files of exhaust systems that people put up is you don't know how good of quality the microphones were, how well your speakers reproduce the sound, etc.., so to try and judge an exhaust sound over the internet through some cheapass speakers, it usually isn't quite as good as being there, but I'll see what I can come up with.See Ya,Carl

You wont lose any low end torque with this muffler. You'll have to e-mail them to find out if they are going to make a kit for the Vibe/Matrix.

I have always gone with a Flowmaster, but a guy down here has a 60 series on his Civic, and it sounds kinda hollow at high rpm. GMD does sound great, but the price is outrageous. I'll stick with Flowmaster, and chances are that the Civic made it sound crappy. Dang hondas.
