CAI - which one

Post by drw2514 »

I'm interested in getting a CAI...but which one should I get? I've narrowed it down to either an Injen or the AEM V2. Any input from the masses?

Is there any difference in power, etc. between the injen and the AEM? Why does the AEM cost so much more if it is basically the same thing?

I talked to the AEM designer at the PRI show in Indianapolis in Decemeber, and really liked what I saw and heard re the AEMV2: The dual diameter piping gives two engine speeds at which peak resonance/power gains occur, as well as allowing the points to be tuned at will, while still fitting the car and positioning the filter for cold air. They saw considerable power gains and broader torque range than their original, which afaik was as good as anyone's. Up to Christmas however the V2 was not available for the Vibe. Is it now?

Injen is more $$$ and more highly reccommended... And I can get one for $300 CAD but people have also said Cosmo runs under $200 with good results.

yes, i have the unichip.... and a trd cai. i don't have an exhaust, but the chip and intake work great! i can feel a substantial difference from stock! i had some probs w/ my CEL from the TRD cai, but w/ the unichip, it resolved it! no more CEL! and i am very happy about it! altho the unichip didn't give me tons of hp, it did however increase the lower range torque about 20% from the dynos an xrs ran. he had a CAI and TRD exhaust w/ the unichip and got like 155 torque and 210 hp. can't remember exactly, but still...

Watched Tuner on SPEED today. they unichipped a VW golf into close to 300HP with a hell of a lot of torque. Wonder how I can submit my car for Johnny B to install a body kit lol.

here's the link to the thread about the chip: http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=6971 there's a lot of good info there and you will want to read up on it before you decide if this is what you want to go with.

I bought a CAI from cosmo racing. It only cost about $110US. But when I installed it, I had to cut about 3 inches off the end. I had to do this because of the fog light housing. The comapny said it fit a 2003 vibe GT and 2003 matrix xrs. Then I thought the fog lights location differ from the vibe to the matrix. Anyone else notice this ???The CAI is awsome, wish i bought it earlier

yes, this is a widely discussed topic. i shoved the filter further up onto the housing, but then ended up replacing the oem fogs w/ aftermarket ones. the a/m fogs don't stick out so far in the back so it's not too much of a prob.

Do these CAI's improve milage as well as power? Also do you get more intake noise? The filters are the K&N cleanable type right? I'd be very interested in one for my Vibe if it would add to my car's economy, both through milage and air cleaner cost savings over say 150k miles, I plan on keeping it for awhile

Technically a CAI should slight reduce mileage, as cold air increases the engine's pumping losses at part throttle. That said, the stock system picks up its air near the radiator support and it's almost as cold as the under fender 'CAI' location, so at a steady cruise there should be little difference. Factor in frequent use of the extra power however, and you might lose a MPG or two. (but it's a small price to pay for the benefits!)

I have a question about the intake....I have a 2003 Vibe & I wanted to upgrade the intake too. I have read that you have to make a slight cut to the intake to make it fit is that right??? I was wondering is the intake made specifically for the Vibe or are you getting one for a different model (ect. Matrix....) and just making modifications to it to make it fit...Thanks for the info and feedback
