Tire and wheel options

Post by pellmellus »

Hello! I've had my car now for 1.5 years and have 30000 miles. I figured I should start thinking about what sort of new tires I should purchase when the time comes. But before I did that, I wanted to know what options Vibe owners had. I've looked at the threads posted here and got some good ideas, however I'm not getting a complete picture of what I can do. I'm not sure where to turn so I though I'd post here. I'm sure others are interested.I have the factory steel 16" rims (no moon-roof). I don't know the width (7.5?). What I am curious about is what other tires sizes will fit these rims. Can I put "taller" 16" tires on these rims for a "fuller" look? The tires that came with the car are more "sport" oriented...not touring. I was also curious about putting on tires that were more SUV-like. What are the height and width limitations for 16" rims and tires? Also, I was interested in 17" rims. What are the options for 17" rims? Can I put 17x7.5 rims on this car? What are the width and height limitations for 17" rims and tires?I am very confused.....thanks for any information! If there is a website I can go to that provides this....that would be good enough!

Well you can put a wider tire on your Vibe but you will want to keep the overall spec the same. I went from stock OEM 16" rims to IKON 17x7 rims. To keep the tire size as close as possible, I went to a wider and low pro tire. From stock P205/55R16 I went to P215/45R17. There is a slight difference in size, my new wheels are like 1% different. Instead of going 60mph I am actually going like 59.6mph I should have actually run a P225 (which would have fit) cause it would have been even closer to the original size but it was more money for the tire.If your looking for a more touring like tire, wider, taller sidewall... you may have to go to a 15" rim. With a 45 sidewall, your ride will be a little rougher. Hope that helped you out. Rims should also be 17x7 at the most I think... could be wrong.

There's a ton of threads on the site re wheel/tire sizes. AFAIK, I've got the biggest that (barely) fit a Vibe, at 275/40 x 17 on 10" wide wheels, but I would suggest you settle for sevaral sizes smaller! A site like http://www.tirerack.com has dimentions so you can match up appearance and diameter.
