I wanna move!!!

Post by Mr. Poopypants »

OK, here's the deal. I want to get the hell out of Pittsburgh. I hate it here. it's always freakin cold, there are no jobs and the people around here are dumb as a rock. I want to move. The criteria for the area I am looking for.......Warm, but not scorchingly hot, place to fish and take my boat, place to ride my motorcycle, on the outskirts of a smaller city. Right now Savannah, Georgia is the front-runner. Anyone else care to suggest an area?

I should add that I don't want to live in California. I enjoy living on ground that doesn't, on occasion, start rumbling and moving.

See, If I move to Savannah, I will have hurricanes, that's enough excitement for me. In Western PA, we have tornadoes on occasion, but they don't impress me.

In that case, I wonder if more people have died or lost their property over hurricanes or earthquakes over the last twenty or thirty years. It might be interesting to find out.

I would think the number of deaths would be much greater for earthquakes and property loss would be greater for hurricanes. I can live with losing property, I can't live with dying............hmmm allow me to rephrase. I enjoy life and don't want to die yet.

Well, all I am trying to say is that life is a risk and risks come in many different ways. Over last twenty some years in Southern California, the largest earthquakes were the Northridge earthquake and Whittier earthquake where 57 and 8 people died, respectively. There are over 20 million people living in Southern California, so it is not as bad as many people think. Of course, the "BIG ONE" could change that. Ultimately, you have to weigh your risks and make the decision that you feel comfortable and can live with .

Pretty much anywhere in SoCali fits the bill, and you wouldn't even care about the minor quakes we get, of which I haven't even noticed one in YEARS. I guess I tune them out lol.Besides, there's TONS of open freeway/highway, coastal drives (PCH, Big Sur >), and Monterrey/Carmel ("50 mile drive" >) to cruise on with your Vibe!Big Sur - McWay FallsBig Sur Lodgehttp://www.bigsurcalifornia.org/Basically, Highway 1 (Pacific Coast Highway aka "PCH") up and down the coast is an awesome drive.Don't forget Sonoma (~6 hrs from LA, 45 mins N of San Fran) and Nappa Valleys (wine tasting...mmm!), Hearst Castle (3-4 hrs from L.A.), Grifith Observatory, and the J. Paul Getty Museum..phew!! Sorry about the Cali Plug, but I love it here and am never moving (unless I have to for some reason) But, where else in the country can you hit the beach in breezy (NOT humid!) 75-85F weather AND snow ski in the same day...within a couple hours of each other no less!

Savannah is an absolutely beautiful city. My family used to have a summer/vacation home on Skidaway Island for a number of years. Savannah can get pretty hot and humid in the summer, if that matters, but is great during the rest of the year. Not to mention all that history there. You do have the infamous 'Palmetto Bugs' there too.. Florida has a number of nice places to live as well, plus you don't have to pay state income tax there.

Tired of winter? Can't find a job? Looking for friendly people?Go to Cuba! Great weather, great fishing, you can tie your boat up anywhere you like (just don't let the naitives take it for a ride to Key West), and in 5 years, you'll have more money coming out of your pockets as the US tourists flock to the island for a cheap Caribbean vacation, of which you will be a resident and can take them out for day cruises on your yacht, or become a tour guide for the tired and hungry......Z plane boss, Z plane

Savannah is great until mid-August/September when the humidity is 100%, the temperatures are in the 100's and the mosquitos and bugs are large enough to carry off your car. I lived in South Carolina for almost ten years, it can be rough in the summer. But, if that is where you go, I wish you the best. Savannah is a beautiful city that can't be touched by any others. Besides that, you would live in the city that spawned the book "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil." Read it if you haven't!!!!

I'm right with ya, there Mike. The job market absolutely sucks here because the idiot mayor and city council seem to think that if they keep raising taxes and taxing new things every week, the city will bring in enough money to get out of bankruptcy. We have the highest parking tax downtown in the nation, and they can't figure out why nobody wants to go there to work or shop. Duh. Not to mention how terrible the roads are and, dear God, the traffic every day. Then in the summer, they always get the great brainstorm idea to shut down half of the bridges that go in and out of the city all summer so you sit in your car baking in the heat for a few hours every day. Only the dumb people are left because all the smart people, and particularly those with a good education, have left. I've been considering some of the same things as you. You just beat me to posting it.I thought about Savannah, ironically as well. But, the summer heat is even worse than what we have here and it lasts longer. I hate extreme heat like that--I'd rather deal with some cold. I visited Florida early last summer and I liked it down there, but the humidity was killer. It made me want to sleep all day. All I could do down there would be to swim or sleep indoors until it cooled off at night. California would be beautiful, but the taxes and all the automotive regulations would make me pull out all my hair. I'd like to have a nice car collection some day, but with all their restrictions, it would make it very difficult. I'll let you in on my latest secret place I might like to live--Santee, California (the town has its own website also). It's a smallish town outside of San Diego and from the little bit I've seen of it, it is absolutely beautiful. The San Diego river runs right outside of town so there's plenty of fishing, swimming, and boating nearby. Only problem is that, again, it's in CA. I don't think I could handle the rampant liberalism in California, either. I'd probably want to kill people too much. I know that the whole state isn't like that, but I don't have a clue on where to go to find like-minded people out there. I'd like to go out there and visit sometime soon to see for myself what it's really like.

I also went to Florida a few months ago, it was humid but it didn't really bother me. My girlfriend (soon to be fiance) an I are also looking at ClearwaterSt. PetersburgOrlando, Florida. Baton Rouge, LA, Montgomery, AL, Charleston, SC...... and a few others. We want to stay on the east coast. I have been to California, I have relatives there. But Cali is a little to busy for me. I want a more laid back lifestyle. But I was surprised, I was chatting with another Genviber and they were surprised you didn't give me crap for it. Well, here's to getting out of the rustbelt.

LOL! Shows how well some people here really know me! I've said it before and it bears repeating, I think I may well be the most misunderstood person who regularly posts here.I frequently advocate the exodus of this area's younger people, particularly if they have a decent education and more than 2 brain cells rolling around in their head. I'd like to get out of here too, but I have to finish up school first. I hope all the younger people with a future leave here and let these idiots who cling to this place and have not a clue as to how economics works rot in the stupidity that they created for themselves. Most of the old steelworker's widows and blue-collar workers who dominate this area are more dangerous in the voting booth than a schizophrenic with an Uzi in a kindergarten class. At least you can reason with the schizophrenic about half of the time .Do yourself a favor and leave the fools to lie in the bed that they made for themselves. This area has such an incredible potential that it is really a crime for them to run everything into the ground like they have. I say let the exodus continue! If ya can't outvote 'em, vote with your feet and your wallet. Leave them behind to suffer with what they brought upon themselves.BTW--I think it was BusinessWeek that listed Orlando, FL as the #2 city in the US for current job growth (we were given a copy of the article in one of my classes about 2 weeks ago). Also, you would be wise to move away and settle into a decent job soon. All current sources and indicators are showing that there will be a job boom coming in about the next 5 years like the country has never seen in modern times. Currently, there are 2 baby-boomers retiring for every one qualified entrant into the job market. This has been going on for a few years now and is becoming a bigger problem that is backing up and set to burst in the next few years. Get yourself some experience now get in good with a company you like and in a few years you will have it made. You'll be able to ask for just about anything you want and be able to get it somewhere. Analysits and economic planners are going nuts trying to figure out what to do about this, as it is a big problem that we all will have to deal with as a nation. My most recent information on this is coming from Business 2.0 magazine (Sept. 2003 issue) where the author talked with business stragegists, people in charge of HR and hiring in US firms, Harvard professors, and the former chairman of the National Commission for Employment Policy to name a few. I've heard very little on TV about this yet, most are too busy trying to blame Bush for a recession that never happened to see this huge problem that is about to smack them all in the head. Just remember where you heard it first and to all the naysayers that I'm sure will arise from this, in a few years I'll gladly sit back and gloat saying "I told you so".

Here, maybe you will find this helpful. I just dug up the article and found the chart in it that shows what areas are and will be experiencing the greatest job growth in the US from 2003-2013. It lists the area and the percentage of job growth expected over the next 10 years which I will list here.Las Vegas 47.7%Orlando 31.9West Palm Beach, FL 28.7Ft. Lauderdale, FL 25.7Riverside, CA 25.6Phoenix 25.3Jacksonville, FL 24.8Tampa, FL 24.8Raleigh-Durham, NC 24.0Sacramento, CA 23.7Austin 22.9Charlotte, NC 20.4Atlanta 19.8San Diego 19.2Washington 18.5Dallas 17.4Oakland, CA 17.3Miami 16.5Denver 16.5Orange County, CA 16.4They cite as sources for the analysis--Global Insight, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Also, the fastest growing occupations will be in the technology and medical fields. I have some data on that also and will share it with you if you'd like, but I'll refrain from posting it with this to keep things simple.

I would like to move out of Pittsburgh to Colorado but the wife can't leave her parents.I was born here and when I was 9 my family moved to Colorado Springs were I lived until I graduated high school in 1988. The economy went bad and it was back to good ole Pittsburgh.I finally figured out how to get my wife to move...I need to convince the inlaws to move too. Now does that sound easy? Well they are retired but they are typical long time Pittsburgh area residents that think this is the only place in the world.

The whole job boom makes sense. Firms are trying to beef up the HR department with employees with PeopleSoft wxperience to cover their butts when all the baby boomers retire. My dad will be one of those in December, I don't want his job, but I can see where you are coming from. BY THE BY I just got a request for more information about myself from Glynn County, GA about working for the county govt. KEEPING MY FINGERS CROSSED!!!!!

Wow,I cannot believe how down you are on Pittsburgh! Compared to the majority of rust belt cities, it is doing very good! Although I certainly cannotblame you for wanting to get out to a warmer climate. I would leave Buffalo in a minute to enjoy more sun than we get here, if I could find a job that pays me as well as the one I have now. Unfortunately that is not likely to happen until the economy picks up. It always wonder how people in Pittsburgh get around all winter with snow and ice on the roads, and all those hills! Its flat here, and people cannot get around in bad winter weather!Maybe you should look into Texas. Areas like San Antonio, Austin, Houston etc are all doing better than the national average for growth, and the weather is better than up here in the Northeast. I am sure it gets warm in the summer down there, but I'd rather spend some summer months where it was hot, than freeze my rear off for 6 months up here!San Diego is probably the best place for weather year round. It stays fairly constant temperature wise at a comfortable weather. Its expensive out there, from what I have heard. Hawaii would be the ideal! I myself am partial to the Phoenix area. It gets really hot there in the summer, but is very comfortable all winter, and it hardly ever rains. Having all that sun would be very nice! Hopefully I can get down there in the not too distant future!Good luck on what you decide!

I don't want to live in Texas, for a variety of reasons. But Phoenix is too friggin hot! But Pittsburgh is doing really bad, the city is looking at a huge deficit, they are doing nothing to make it better, the city is falling apart...........Trust me, it eats (removed).

Doesn't look like we'll get out of bankruptcy any time soon, either. And our mayor wants to steal a few city blocks through eminent domain laws from private owners to construct some kind of regional district in the middle of downtown that still nobody knows exactly what the purpose for it is. Before going into bankruptcy, the city government asked the county and federal gov'ts for bailout funding. The county basically said "screw you, we have enough of our own problems". The feds wanted to know how much we were in debt. These clowns here in local government ran things so incredibly poorly that they actually had no clue how much in debt we were and they tried to slide that on to the feds. The feds essentially asked the city to guesstimate how much debt they were in, so they went and did some figuring and came back and told them somewhere around $4 million. The feds wanted a better idea of what the real numbers were and sent in their own auditing team. They found that we were actually more than $40 million in debt and it is piling on fast. So that brought on the bankruptcy, higher taxes, new taxes, taxes on taxes, and the large negative population growth that made a sucking sound so loud that Ross Perot should be able to hear it down in Texas.Quote, originally posted by Fformula88 »San Diego is probably the best place for weather year round. It stays fairly constant temperature wise at a comfortable weather. Its expensive out there, from what I have heard.I knew that it was nice there, but I thought it still got real hot in the summer. I also have heard that the cost of living there is rather high, but the wages there are adjusted for it so it pretty much evens out. I know houses are quite expensive there.

Well they are retired but they are typical long time Pittsburgh area residents that think this is the only place in the world.LOL, yeah that's the typical story with the ol' folks around here. You just have to let them consume some more of our fine refined river water until they go senile. Then they won't fuss much over the move. LOL.

I hope they are not making you head down to GA for a third time, especially if its on your own dime! Sounds like they are having trouble making up there minds, although getting the third call sure is a good sign! Good luck with the interview!!
