mac users sit back and gloatBeen a lot of email worms running around the past couple of weeks, these latest ones seem to read your MS address book/contact list and pull out pairs of names, sends the virus to the first address as if it came from the second address. I started getting these emails last week, some token message to get you to open the attachment, Some actually had the virus as a zip file, which gets it past some email filtering. This week it's email masquerading as if it comes from your ISP saying something about due to a change in service, you need to open the attachment and follow the directions. Even has the virus as a password protectedzip file, and they give you the password. So, if you get an email from someone you never heard about saying that you sent them a virus, it could be true, but it could also mean that someone who has you in their address book is the culprit who has the virus.just be sure about what email attachments you actually open, keep your antivirus software up to date. I have not fallen for their diabolical schemes, my machine is OK, just a heads up.
Well, I would sit back and gloat in my Mac-ness but...I get to deal with the other side of this virus attack. It seems that no matter how many times you tell someone not to open an attachment they still do it. Not only that but when the antivirus stops them from opening it, they get all upset and call me wanting to open their attachment. Tracking this virus across 20+ offices spread all across the state of Montana, not fun!
I hear you! Just yesterday, the guy in the office next door asks me if I got an email from the email admin about the viruses. Yup, he opened the email, but not the attachment (thank goodness).I got 3 of them yesterday, to 3 different addresses, and then a 4th one again this morning. Do people honestly have nothing better to do that program these replicating worms? Get a life!

We ended up blocking all file attachments at work in relation to .exe, .zip, .pif, .bat, etc... some legit files (pictures) we let through. 98% of the attachments blocked are viruses. I'd say we quarantine approx. 2000 a day just in viruses that attempt to enter our network. This isn't including the 10,000 SPAM that gets blocked... grrr @ spam and viruses!
I'd love to be able to do that, but we use ISP hosted email with about 10 different ISPs. Getting them all to help would be a pain. Those are the breaks when you're a 5 month old department in a company that has been running for nearly 30 years, I suppose. I'm trying to standardize virus scanning and pull our email resources into the company. That should help a bit at least. Unfortunately, it's impossible to stop everything. I'm going to have to agree, GRRR!!!
The last one had come from my "IP" saying that there was too many viruses coming out and to run this because it would fix it...can't open anything anymore....First person I find that creates one of these annoying viruses, it's feet to nut time.

I keep getting up to like 5 emails a day from "yahoo tech support" or something like that saying my email account is canceled because of unautherized access. Then it tells me to download this file and everything will be fixed. I just laugh and delete them. My virus scanner red flags all that stuff anyhow and gives me a warning
My favorite is currently the PayPal.com email virus that Norton keeps picking up... And you have to love the ones that say that your ICQ account is about to expire, so enter in your info here and it'll be fine..

When you quarantine the virus, it should strip the attachment out of the message. That does not mean you are infected, just that an e-mail you received was and it caught it before you had the chance to open it up. Even if you did get to the attachment, its real-time scanning should pick it up if you keep your virus definitions (LiveUpdate) current.

Sorry Nick. But the fact is i still get it. wierd. I am using Pccilliin which has never let me down before.

like nick said, it sounds like you are receiving emails with viruses, but that does not mean that your machine is infected. It sounds like your antivirus software is doing it's job detecting them and dealing with them.Do you keep receiving the same email with a virus, or are you receiving different emails with viruses?
well , i was recieving the same string of viruses from differnt email addys, but my wife recently lost her job, and so I have had to cut back on a few "luxuries", as in using "lite" cable internet instead of high speed internet. As a result my 7 available email addys went down to one (mrs. doopey won the coin toss! hehehe), and so i just made new hotmail account.problem solved! lolThanks nick and joat for your help tho!

Tip 1: Don't use Outlook Express, it's one of the most insecure email clients out there (or so I've heard)Tip 2: In outlook and outlook express, turn OFF the automatic view pane. Some emails have code built into the email itself that'll install things, no attatchements required.Tip 3: Windows update. Windows update. Windows update. Most often the problem could've been solved if you've updated your computers with the latest security patches.
