i have an domain name that includes an email address (yourdomain@yourdomain.com) and AOL told me today that no matter what i do it wont work through aol! it worked when i set it up on microsoft outlook for the first time last night but now it will only recieve mail and it says a foreign host is closing the connection. is there any way to get past my isp and be able to send mail. i read that a program called eudora would do it but it gets the same closed connection......arrghh....i hate aol

the site that hosts my domain requires me to use a non-standard port for outgoing mail. Who hosts your domain?I have only seen AOL one time, and I didn't like it because it dominated the desktop, filled it up wiht a bunch of stuff I didn't care about. I found an ISP of pghconnect.com, based in stnag2vibe's neighbohood, they have local numbers all over the place, none of the extra baggage AOL sticks you with. Probably some others cheaper, but they've been reliable, have good spam filters on email also.

YES!I still visit GenVibe periodically. I have not forgotten about my "original" family over here!
A long time ago, I used a third-party browser and email client through AOL. Seems to me it required configuration for one of AOL's proxy servers, but that's long ago and far away and I can't remember what the specifics were. Anyway, that info should be fuel for searching and I'll search myself. AOL is just an ISP. They shouldn't be able to keep you from using third party software any more than they should be able to block your access to certain sites.

Well they sure are...if i try to send mail then they cut off the connection to the client.....so unfair!

fortunecity and aol restrict their help pages to registered members, so I can't see what they might offer. an error message about foreign host closing the connection could mean that your email client isn't set up right. There are a lot of safeguards put in place to keep spmmers from using their mail services, so you probably need to authenticate yourself to the mail server somehow, but there are different ways to do it.Look at whatever help pages fortunecity has to see if they have configuration instructions, and maybe drop them an email. If they tell you that it must be AOL blocking the connection, then start bugging AOL tech support. AOL costs enough, get some tech support from them.
I'm pretty sure this makes a lot of sense. AOL might not allow certain POP accounts to go through their access numbers, because it could be a way to hide spammers. Because of how AOL does things (you're connecting to AOL, not really the internet...so it's like a LAN), it's possible that they won't let you send.I also have issues with some ISPs, and also my domain provider (yahoo), that have issues with me sending mail through ANYWHERE. Yahoo, for example, needs me to check my mail before I can send..and I can never get it right in Outlook! Same with Earthlink, because they're the ISP, they won't allow outgoing mail unless you're connected through their dialup...

You're right, they could block the POP protocol all together, but that seems a bit drastic. I can't see that as an anti-spam method. The only thing an ISP should be concerned about with spamming is relaying messages through their mail servers. That's why a lot of large ISPs won't let you connect to their mail servers unless you're either authenticated to both send and receive or you're signed in to one of their access accounts.
True, millster...but look at what you're dealing with. AOL, the end-all, be-all of the internet! It may be drastic, but for them, it's business..
