what size is too big?

Post by wicked1981 »

Just wondering maybe someone knows this. Whats the biggest size wheel you can put on the Vibe without having to modify anything? Just want to buy and bolt on.

Are you talking about the max width of a tire or the biggest wheel you can put on without changing the overall diameter of hte tire? You can go as by as 20" on the Vibe, with 215/30r20You can also go with 19" and put 215/35r19 and you'll get a perfect fit.If you want to play with the tire size, go herehttp://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Well I meant if I would be able to put bigger than 17's on the Vibe, but you answered my question. So what size can I go with some 18's? Since thats the size im planing on.

Also can't imagine anything over an 18 is safe...if they worry about 17's causing body flex, I sure as hell bet a 19 or 20 would be destructive...

Body flex? Only with the moon and tunes from what I've heard. The "Gxp" and "GT-R" concepts both are rolling on 18's. Can't imagine them putting those on if they would be in danger.

Ahhh Gees, If Mad BIll sees this post he will have another project for the winter. He is already rolling on the biggest tire package that I have ever seen on a Vibe, and now he will be going bigger again

My tires are 225/40/18. I put over 10,000 miles on my car without my windshield or my moonroof cracking.

I don't like anything bigger than 18". I'm not a big fan of chrome either. I want to get a set of black Konig Glides...I love black wheels.

I've been off the air for a while due to messing up some security settings in an effort to eradicate some %$#@#$ fungus-like program that kept taking over my home page. Thanks to Nick's guidance, I have, as you see, overcome the problems and returned!Anyway: My original plan was to go for 255/35 x 18"s, which I calculated would just fit and would be close to stock diameter. The 275/40 x17" tires and matching wheels were ones I'd had for years and I decided I should adapt them to the Vibe and wear them out before they died of old age. If I was starting with a blank check and wanted 17"s, I would go down to 245s so I could drop it 2" or more, rather than my tire rub-limited 1-1/4".Some time ago, a N.J. member had 19"s, which he said worked great, despite the "pot hole capital" rep of his NYC commute. A few months later they were for sale cheap because 2 were bent. That's the big prob. with low profiles: they can't handle impacts! [J.C. Whitney to the rescue: They offer wheel discs that cover about an inch of the tire, thus mounting one on a 16" wheel makes it look like an 18", but retains the deep profile of the 55 series tire to absorb the bumps! (Hold the flames, I'm just mentioning them, not recommending!)

According to the Canadian 2003 Vibe Order Guide, the problem with 17"s and the moon roof is that this combination fares badly in the EPA rollover calculation, which is based only on center of gravity height and vehicle track. Tire grip, etc. is not a factor. (The calculation approach has been widely criticized and is being replaced with an actual vehicle driving evaluation.)

I have a set of 20's, Boss 308 with tires from my S-10 Xtreme that I am getting rid of and I want to put them on my new '04 Vibe, but I don't know 1) if they'll even fit, and 2) what I will have to do to put them on if they do fit. I assume I will need a mod kit for the lugs and I may even need to get new tires if the ones on there are too big. Any ideas or suggestions?

I dunno if 20's would look THAT big on the vibe I currently have 18" Tenzo R's on my vibe, wrapped in 215/35/18 Ventus rubber and there's still quite a bit of room for larger rims.
