How many miles should I breakin the motor.

Post by syclnjr »

HEy there all I am new to the forum as I just bought a 2004 GT Abyss and gray last week. I am curious about how lon gI should go to breakin the motor as far as mileage goes. I bought it last week with 6 miles on it and I am up to 400. Should I change the oil at about 1000 or 1500 and if I am going to run sythetic in it should I wait to put that in until it has about 3000 on it or so? Thanks guys and I absolutely love my car. Mike

If you read your manual, you will find the answer to the break in question on page 2-17:Quote »New Vehicle “Break-In”NOTICE:Your vehicle doesn’t need an elaborate“break-in.” But it will perform better in the longrun if you follow these guidelines: Don’t drive at any one speed -- fast orslow -- for the first 500 miles (805 km).Don’t make full-throttle starts. Avoid making hard stops for the first200 miles (322 km) or so. During this timeyour new brake linings aren’t yet brokenin. Hard stops with new linings can meanpremature wear and earlier replacement.Follow this breaking-in guideline everytime you get new brake linings. Don’t tow a trailer during break-in. See“Towing a Trailer” in the Index for moreinformation. As to oil changes, the various maintenace schedules start on page 7-5.You have either a 3000 or 7500 mile interval, depending on whether you fall under Short or Long trip maintenance schedues.
