GM Card Discount

Post by Helixthree »

Does anyone in here have a Vibe, or Pontiac in general that they bought using a GM Credit from a GM card? Im asking because my father has a fat credit of 3000, but it'll be 3500 (the max the credit can be) by the time im ready to buy myself a new ride (probably a Vibe GT). I would really like to know. I was interested in a Saturn ION Quad Coupe which will have the 2.4 L Ecotec engine with 170HP for '05, but apparently Saturn will only let you use 1000 of a GM card credit towards new Saturn Purchases... Anyone have any ideas on this?

yes i used my gm card savings toward the purchase of the vibe the ammount you can use is based on several things the most important how long you have had the card when they first started there were no caps on anything so you could theoretically buy and entire car on saved up earnings. they eventually figured out this was bad so they decided to put caps on based on the car you buy. I know that my fam is grandfatherd in on the old plan

Use my GM card all the time, even my "big" vacations and such. On my 94' Sonoma, I got @ 7500 off of it. On my 99' Silverado 4500~5000. On my Vibe (that GM has caped at $1000) the dealership took all I had at the time: @$3500!Ya get the idea I REALLY like my GM card Oh yes, all the above has not cost me ANYTHING - I pay it off every month.

If you have the old GM Card which gives you $500 per anniversary year, the maximum you can accrue is $4000, not $3500. The rule is that the accrued points expire after seven years. For example, let's say you opened the account in January 1990, and made the first purchase in April 1990 and have been collecting $500 every year for $3500 by Jan of 1997. You can still accrue more points in Jan-Mar 1997, upto $500, before you start losing points from April 1990 in April 1997.Even GM Card service reps told me it's $3500. Only after I grilled them on exactly what the terms were, they got into the details and told me how it can be actually more that $3500.In my case I had $3300 after 7 years and the first month after 7 years, I made a big purchase and got $500 in the first month of 8th year. I also lost $12 dollars in rewards in the same month from 7 years ago. So the total was $3788, which I was able to apply all of to a new Vibe.

Awesome. I dont know how long my dad has had his card, but he used it on his '96 Sonoma, and his 99 Silverado. He has $3000 saved up but has no plans to use it for a while and he said it maxes out at $3500 and that i could use it... lucky me So i hope i can use more than 1k, cuz thats my main deterrent from getting a saturn Ion Vs a Vibe GT..~Jason

Once again, the card theoratically maxes out at $4000, not $3500, depending on timing of the purchases. The GM Card has been giving out wrong information to your dad and just about everyone else.

Seems to me that the transferability only applies to relatives living in the same household. Some years ago my son who actually lived in another state leased a GM vehicle using my address and my GM earnings. The only proof they asked for was his drivers license which was easy as he had never bothered to get a new drivers license in his new state etc. His license showed my address. He operated that vehicle in the other state for a couple of years with "out of state" plates and then finally officially "moved" and got the local plates. Also - another possible source of an extra discount. Three times in my life (1993, 1996 and 1998) I bought a new car and had it titled jointly with one of my recent college grad children and we qualified for the college graduate rebate.

You can trade points with anyone, if there's enough mutual trust!Step 1. The card holder has the would-be points user added to his/her GM card. (This is quite common, e.g.when 2 people start up a business together.)Step 2. The points user applies the points to his/her deal.Step 3. The card holder has the points user deleted from the card.Step 4. (Optional) The grateful points user refunds a percentage of the points in cash to the card holder.

Hey - Thanks for the info. I have heard of that before. EXCELLENT WORK AROUND. Proves the value of these discussion boards. As anyone who knows me will attest, I am always saying there is more that I don't know (or can't rememeber) than what I do know.

With my GM card credits, before they changed things, and my GM retiree status, my Vibe cost $13,800 - a really great deal. I don't use that GM card as often as I used to, because it no longer offers what it did at one time.

Yea my grandfather retired from Oldsmobile as a regional service manager in 1981, my aunt retired from GMAC 2 year ago (both after significant times with their respected companies... aunt 30 years, grandfather retiring early in early 80s instead of getting screwed later for benefits. Also i will be eldgable for the graduation discount as i'll be getting it right after i graduate from undergrad. Im looking at 3500 - 4000 if its more than the "cap" in help, although that site says only 1000 help, im hoping theres a way around this. Also im expecting the retiree status to save me at least 1000. In addition to this they are offering 2000 back or 0.0 percent financing. Id do whatever is cheapest, but also i am legally still residing at my fathers house, and will be when this car is purchased.Im not looking for a car until July of 2005, as i will have just returned from studying abroad in Germany, and have graduated with a History degree before entering a masters in education program.I cant justify a car payment while im in Europe for 4 months. So if anyone has a work up of how much they saved specificially from retireee status, and or the max theory GM Card credit, that would be awesome. I know incentives will change in 18 months, but im sure they will still need to sell cars then as well.I am a little bummed however that the pics of the 05 seem rather tame. I was soo looking forward to the mean stance of the Vibe GT in Abyss. Thanks everyone for your help, keep it coming or PM me.

good news, there is now different bonusthere is now an extra "$600" in gm card rebate, found out this is a targeted offer:http://gmcard.com/bonusearnings/some of you might even have the extra $1,000 bonus, my wife got it. log into gmcard.com for rebates, check on the right hand side that says "bonus just for you"Helixthree, if your gm card has an annual cap of $500, I am sure you can use the maximum rebate you have. the rebate cap of $1,000 is for the new gm card that does not have an annual earning cap.

NO SALES TAX! Here in Columbus, Ohio we pay a sales tax of 6.75% on most everything but food. Plus a graduated Ohio state income tax that amounts to about 5% of total income for an average person. On top of that Columbus has a City income tax of 2% on earned income. Columbus Real Estate Taxes are relatively modest at about 1.2% of appraised value though some of the suburbs are easily double that rate. AND the State, the City, and the local school system all say they are broke. I guess the message is GO WEST old man!

Well, we are one of two states that have no sales tax, but they tax the hell out of us on cigarettes, alcohol, gasoline, income, property tax etc.~Jason

Salsa!, I have had the GM card for a long time, since probably1990 or so. IIRC, at that time the card maxed out at $7500, things have changed a lot since then-max is much lower, cap on per year, cpas on how much you can get back on what vehicle, etc etc. So it is not nearly as good as it used to be. Sigh.

Perhaps there was more than one GM Card program but I was one of the original cardholders and my deal then (and now) is a max of $500 a year with a 7 year expiration on earned rebates. In the early days they let you earn the rebate on transferred balances which they let you do by writing a check so they really didn't know if it was paying off a credit card balance or just deposting into a bank account. I did a couple of those where I wrote a GM Card check to my bank account and a bank account check to the GM card check at the same time with the result of never having a balance on which they could charge interest yet I got the 5% rebate credit. Now they don't let you earn a rebate on such transactions.
