I was playing with my shifter after work (please, no comments) and noticed that there was a bit of play in it. Basically if I held the shifter at point 1 in the picture and then pushed the shifter side to side it would rotate when point 1 was held still. I decided to tighten the 6 screws that were suppose to be holding it firmly. After tightening them the play was gone and the shifter now feels better. In order to get to the screws just remove the boot around the shifter. When removing the boot start towards the rear of the vehicle and remove the front last. This is an easy fix and improved the feel a fair amount. If anyone else decides to do this please post your results.
Hawke, I'm not familiar with the mechanics of these shifters, but were the 6 screws mistakenly not tightened on the assembly line, or are they rubber mounted to allow some "give"? Any problems with finding the right gear after you tightened them up? I was wondering if they are not torqued down for a reason. I'm not overly impressed with the feel of my 5-speed mixer either, so maybe I'll give it a try also. Thanks,Carl
Carl,It's not a rubber mount. From what I remember the shifter attached to the black plastic below it, then that attached to some white plastic that created a pivot with the metal cylindrical housing and then the 6 screws attached the metal piece to the plastic. I wouldn't even say I tightened them 1/4 of a turn. I found it easier to find the correct gear after tightening it up. I'm not overly impressed with the feel of the 5-speed either and was looking at it to see how easy it would be to swap shifters, if I were to find an aftermarket one. If you pop up the boot check to see if you get the same movement when applying side to side pressure on the shifter when holding the point labeled "1". If you don't, then I wouldn't bother with it. I'll try and look at it more tomorrow.
After getting stuck in stop in go traffic for an hour I can definately say it feels better. What I posted above was a fairly accurate description. There is no rubber to be seen, only hard plastic.
What procedure did you use to remove the shift boot. Does it pop out or are there screws. Im getting a new MOMO shift knob tommrow and I would like to order a MOMO shift boot also. Please advicethanks

The boot isn't attached by any screws. If you push it forward in car you can remove the rearward portion first and then work the rest of it out. It was very easy. I'm sure there is a more appropriate way. You probably have to remove the whole plastic piece around the boot but I didn't want to risk cracking the plastic or breaking a clip.
