Automatic Shifting

Approaching the 10,000 mile mark and I'm beginning to notice that the engine is more responsive when I first bought the car. Which bring me to this question. When can I use the 2nd and "L" gears to get that extra low end torque?? And when shouldn't I use them to protect my trans???
