Now this is a bad winter road!

Post by VibeChick »

This is the Trans-Labrador Highway (Canada). The Provincial government actually supplies satellite phones to drivers who drive this road across the wilderness where it hits -75 degrees during the winter. It's possible for a stranded driver to be 180 miles away from the nearest phone. No cell service here. When a driver gets to the other side(civilization) they simply drop-off the satellite phone

It really is a road, but I don't know how many people actually use it in the winter - although crews clear it. Apparently it is nice in the summer - but I've never been!

I am speechless. I grew up in Colorado and thought I had seen a lot of snow. It is no wonder Canadians are a hardy group of people.

It must be a vital link to something for them to go to such great measures to keep it open and provide satellite phones!

That is a rather intimidating drive through something like that. I think I've posted this picture somewhere before, but here's one of Beartooth Pass in Eastern Montana.
