Statistics That Shock

Post by rasermon »

A. The number of physicians in the U.S. is 700,000. B. Accidental deaths caused by Physicians per year is 120,000. C. Accidental deaths per physician is 0.171 (U.S. Dept. of Health & Human Services) Then think about this: A. The number of gun owners in the U.S. is 80,000,000 (yes, eighty-million!). B. The number of accidental gun deaths per year (all age groups) is 1,500. C. The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is .0000188. Statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners. FACT: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN, BUT ALMOST EVERYONE HAS AT LEAST ONE DOCTOR. Please alert your friends to this alarming threat. We must ban doctors before this gets out of hand. As a public service, I have omitted the statistics on lawyers for fear that the shock could cause people to seek medical attention.

Saw this bumper sticker many times. I want one for myself. BTW--my mom is the best shot in our family. I wouldn't dare stand in front of her when she's got the .357 Magnum loaded. Luv ya, mom!

Although I don't have the numbers, I have a similarily interesting statistic. The incidence of cancer is higher in countries that have the most libraries. In countries where there are no or very few libraries, there are very few cases of cancer. Perhaps libraries cause cancer? No, because statistics can be made to say anything you want them to say. The reason why library-dense countries have more cancer is that they have more medical services to diagnose cancer.Don't get me wrong, I'm agreeing with you -- guns don't kill people, people kill people. It's just that stats are funny things.
