MS Office running slow

Post by pmh013 »

We run a peer-to-peer network at work. At least 4 users (2 running WinXP home, 2 running Win2K pro) have noticed an extreme slow down in MS Office applications. Specifically, I've noticed that Word & Excel are running like a dog. Outlook seems to be OK.I've run Windows Update, Office Update & virus-scanned using the latest definitions. My HD is only 8% fragmented. I have 53% free space on my HD.Any other suggestions? It sucks when it takes 3 minutes to open any one document from your own HD, and even longer if you're going over the network.

If it didn't used to be this way, the first question would be "What has changed?" Was there any new software installed, or any changes to the network that correspond to the time when the slow down started? Was there anything done to just the 4 particular machines, or perhaps done to all but those 4 machines? Is it running slow for just some documents or for all of them, including token small ones?

I found out what the problem is.If you are running Norton Anti-Virus 2002/2003 & Office 2XXX, you'll probably see a similar slow down. When NAV released the last update, something in the code changed, and basically renders NAV & Office incompatible. To fix: (You'll need administrator status to do this) Open NAV, click on Options, the Miscellaneous. Uncheck Enable Office Plug-in.Everything should be OK now.It seems that if you have NAV2004, there is no problem.
