Intake question

Post by Dax »

Hi there! Well, it's been a week with my shadow vibe and I love it. It's another world going from a Tundra to a compact car. Anyway, i'm already ready to mod the thing . On my short list of things I want to do are stereo upgrades, putting a REAL horn on it (can't stand the Roadrunner sound effect), and a free-flow intake. As far as the intake is concerned, has anyone performed an independent dyno run before and after installing one? I've seen some posted here that are from the manufacturer. But, i'd like to see someones own experience and hard numbers. It's not that I don't doubt the improvement. I just want to see if the price is justified given the increase in HP/torque and noise. Thanks!Dax

Go check over at http://matrixowners.com A lot of guys over there get dynos. Do some searching, and I'm sure you'll find something! May I suggest an AEM CAI. I love mine!

I just don't get it--I look at the numbers and see that it buys you maybe 4-5 HP to get a CAI. Why is that worth it? I'm the first to admit I know next to nothing about mods, or performance driving, but it seems like a waste of time and money to get a couple of percent increase in performance. How could you even feel it?--Splash

I've had both on my car and there's a definite difference between the two. The "short ram" seems to be louder, but there's definitely more power in the CAI, especially once the ECU get's adjusted to it.

I have an Injen CAI on my base and the dynos say that it will give 8 hp and 5 lbs. torque. The torque is there almost at idle. It make a huge difference in performance. Best mod for the $ you can do.

glad to see another member switching from a tundra to a vibe. what model do you have? i have a GT and with the CAI, you can really feel a big diff when accelerating. i had it off for about a month or two and getting on the highway was a lot more work. it's definitely the best bang for the buck! and i believe the full CAI will add approx 8-10 hp not 4 hp. that would be a short ram.

I have a base version. Shadow in color, M&T, ABS, aide-airbags. It's taken me a bit to get used to the lack of midrange torque compared to the Tundra. But each time i'm at the pump I get a smile on my face when I see I spent $15 instead of $30.Dax

ok...so where is the cheapest place to buy the AEM CAI? Also, how is the filter? I've always been skeptical of K&N and the lack of filtration tradeoff with higher flow rates.Dax

There's almost always one for sale. And if you don't want to spend $200 on this CAI, you can get the Cosmo Racing CAI for $105.It is cheaper and per what I've heard about it, it works very well.

K & Ns are very efficient re filtration as well as flow! They were developed many years ago for off road bike racing and were the first filters to survive all day Baja-type events without clogging solid or administering a "Mexican Re-bore" (worn rings & cylinders.) As far as flow, I have measured pressure drops through several stock filters Vs. equivalent K&Ns and always confirmed their claims.

well, the gas was expensive, but damn, it was fun! here's a pic of me mudding in the tundra back over july 4 weekend '02. unfortunately the mud wasn't as deep as the previous year so i couldn't get it all the way on top of the hood and roof... and another pic of me in my tundra after mudding. not as dirty as i'd like it to be.

Yeah, living in Texas has it's perks I guess. At about 1.30 a gallon, 22 gallons for a fillup (about) it comes out to be almost $30.I didn't have a 4x4, but I did have a 4x4 Tacoma before that. I REALLY miss that thing. Supercharged and all. Much fun!Dax
