iPod Users: How do you mount it in your Vibe?

Post by Kari »

Well, I think I'm going to invest in an FM transmitter for my iPod so I can listen to it in the Vibe. But, I was curious as to how other iPod users have theirs mounted in the car.I'd prefer not to have to drill holes in my dash. Actually I really really don't want to have to do that. Or put anything sticky on the dash.I like the DLO Transpod but the one for the 3rd generation is STILL not out, and I don't know if it would get along too well with an iSkin, but I doubt it.Anyone have any ideas? Examples?

Kari, I would go with a Cup Holder Car Mount. I have seen them in Wal-mart.

I don't know about mounting, but here are some reviews of fm transmitters. Some of them are specifically for the ipod and some are more universial. The iTrip an FM transmitter for the iPod.http://www.the-gadgeteer.com/itrip-review.html Here are two different models that are more universal http://www.the-gadgeteer.com/a....html http://www.the-gadgeteer.com/irock-review.html I'm thinking about getting one of these for my Archos Jukebox and so that my wife can plug in her iBook to better hear DVD's in the car on long trips. They just released a new model of the irock that comes with a 12V adapter for the same price as the original. (sold at Radio Shack).

Saved..yeah I knew about this a long time although I am an Ipod fanatic so most people didn't know about it.. Best thing to do if you are thinking about buying an ipod is to get it from Best Buys and purchase the 4 year protection plan..

Wow I had no idea the battery wasn't replaceable. in fact, I assumed it used traditional alkalines! Not that I'd planned on getting one, but knowing that would certainly sway my decision...

And why did the price come down? A brilliant graffitti artist took it to the streets and got them to listen!

If you go to the Apple support forums, or the various iPod websites, I think you will see who really changed Apple's mind about this stuff. Enough people who owned iPods complained and Apple brought the price down. I wouldn't call anyone who does graffiti and vandalizes stuff like that "brilliant."Personally I see him as lucky he hasn't been sued and put in jail for willful destruction of property.

And also in Apple's defense, I haven't really heard that many users complain about their battery completely dying like that. And many third party companies also sell battery replacements now.I haven't figured out how to mount it in the car yet. I bought an iTrip at the Apple Store in NYC, and it works fine, but better if the iPod is touching my body, because I'm a better conductor than air. Since I have the iSkin eXo, the iPod itself is pretty "grippy" so I just let it sit on my leg, and it transmits well, is easily within my reach, and stays put.I still may look into one of those longer cupholder mounts, though. I had only seen low ones, and the Vibe's cupholders are so low-set that those wouldn't really work for me. But that looks nice.

How about something like this: I know you don't wanna use adhesive on your dash, but it's supposed to remove almost entirely, and whatever doesn't I'm sure you could remove with goo gone. The pic shows it holding a Sky Fi, but it can be used with just about anything!Another alternative is a VSM: Vehicle specific mount. It does require some screwing, but the screws are behind some trim, and when the bracket is removed, no one will liekly know the mount was there. They can be used to mount just about anything, not only satellite radio tuners.I used one for my sky fi in my vibe:[]bFront shot: Rear shot:

I had seen those somewhere, too...the one like you have. I must have this phobia about removing dash panels and trim pieces from my car...LOL I've been to Walmart but forgot to look for the long cupholder mount...

Kari: You can get it from http://www.xmfanstore.com. Go to http://www.vidrenlabs.com/vibe.html for details on my install of the XM Roady (which will be updated more.. soon..) It has direct links to the Specific Mount. As for installing. Don't be paranoid! The mount for our car is really easy to put in, you literally just pull out that chrome piece to the right of the AC, a little filing, and three screws..and it's all good.Speaking of which, ragingfish, how much filing did you do to the back of that chrome piece to make it fit right?

I had to redrill two holes in the bend of the mount, drive the screws in at an angle, and THEN it finally would sit flat. Kari: If you decide to get that mount, and need a hand installing it, that should be enough motivation to get you to the next meet.

Well I guess that's out, as I am NOT filing my dash pieces! LOLBut I'm coming to the next meet anyway, mount or no mount.

The only thing that gets filed is the silver trim piece on the right side of the climate control. You could always replace it down the line if you chose to.

Has anyone tried this in a Vibe without the changer? Our head unit is not "flat" on that right side...there is a bump for the buttons very close to that edge that I would be afraid would interfere...

I use the ProFit VSM, which mounts by the climate control.IMHO, the adhesive of the ProClip will give out over time, and it just looks cruddy. The ProFit, though requiring a bit of effort to install, is a more secure install, and is cheaper!

One option that I have been using is the PodPod by Griffin Technologies: http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/podpod/It positions the iPod nicely, fits either cup holder in the vibe. It is cheap. Nice little solution. It will also fit an iPod with an iSkin. You have to kinda push it into place, but it is nice and secure. Just a thought for a nice little mount with little to no effort.

Installed a new HU also and the iPod is laying in the glove box out of side since the cable is like 3-4 feet long. Now sure if it will stay there. Anyone have alternatives to routing and have pictures?

I have a JVC KW-500 unit double din. I also have the JVC ipod adapater so I can plug it in and charge it and control it from the head unit.I ran the adapter wire behind the HVAC controls and right to the lower cubby below the shift. So I fit the ipod right in there and close it. Never have to remove it, it's out of the way, and stored nicely.
