Hi all,I have recently decided that I'm going to buy a Vibe, just not sure which model yet. I was wondering what other people's opinion on the AWD version is. I live in Kingston, Ontario so we do get a lot of snow here in the winter. I was just wondering if I should buy the AWD version over the Base. It would cost about $2000 CND more. Is it worth it?

Check out http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=6486 for what some folks had to say about the base vs AWD decision. What made you choose Vibe?
Thanks joatmon,I've decided to buy the vibe because it seems to be the most practical and the one I fit in the best. At 6'2" most of the other hatchbacks i've looked at the roof line has been to low. Some of the other cars i've look at are:Ford Focus ZX5 - not a very reliable car; roof line to lowProtege 5 - nice car but again the roof line was to lowVW Golf - haven't really looked at yet but looks to boxyMatrix - not as nice looking as the VibeSaturn VUE - to big for what i need; didn't like the style and concerns about the VTi transmissionLike SgrPlum I've just got a new full time job and excited about buying the Vibe. From what ive read so far I think i'm leaning towards the FWD version.

I bought a vibe because it fit my criteria of "the best gas mileage I could fit in". when shopping for a car, a lot of them are just out of the question if you're tall.Have you taken a vibe for a test drive yet? I find it to be a lot of fun to drive.
i have the GT and we have about 4" snow and ice on the ground. i also have studded snow tires. so far no real probs, altho the starting is kinda slow. if you're worried about the snowy/winter conditions, and you are choosing b/w the awd and base, i'd spend the extra money and get the awd. it'll have better resale value anyways. plus, you'll be able to feel more confident driving.
Might wanna reach o ut for members such as ArcsVibe, MadBill, AtWork, Salsa, Sub-Vibe-R, etc. They all live in the same approximate parallel as you -- can let you knwo what they have and if they're experiencing operational problems...
YES!I still visit GenVibe periodically. I have not forgotten about my "original" family over here!

I have a 105 km commute to work every day (M-F) and another 105 km home. My drive is all highway (Trans-Canada and a "secondary" highway). It's all single lane (not twinned). They're OK about clearing the Trans-Canada, but not so much the other highway. I got my Vibe to replace my 99 Ford Explorer Sport (which I loved, but was putting me in the poor house when it came to gasoline). I wanted ground clearance (because the ditches here are really deep, and if I hit the ditch, I'd like to be able to drive out) & all wheel drive (for the same reason).I've never had a traction issue with this car. Last year, the Friday before Christmas, they closed the highway 20 km from my town. When I heard it had re-opened, I left, and managed to just catch up with the backlogged traffic. It's a good (though eerie) feeling when you're doing 40 km/h in bumper to bumper traffic, and the semi in front of you just starts sliding sideways, but you're stuck to the road.[I only went to work that day because it was payday! It took me 2 hours to get there, I stayed for 4 hours (including lunch) and went home (which took an hour and a half).]There are a few AWD owners in the snow belt here on the board. I'm sure you'll get a few more responses from those of us who really know what winter is.

i have a awd that i bought last january.......it just turned over 7000mi..i find the awd helpful when the roads are icy...the fronts spin a couple of revolutions then she hooks up and away you go....it probably would do better w/snows over stock but so would everything else....the system kicks in and you dont feel it and you dont know its slick until you drive something else that day and realize how bad it really is...i can drive on hazardous roads better than any other 4wd i've owned....the only car that comes close to the traction i have is the company taurus w/traction control/abs/studded snow tires...at least i have abs on the awd and that helps a whole lot....we live with winter 7 months here and it is a good car to have during those months...if you live in an area where awd/4wd is common then the awd vib would hold its resale well.
Hi all,Thanks for all of the advice. It helps out a lot. I am still not sure what I am going to buy but I will think about the pros and cons. I probably wont be buying the vibe for a couple more months, but I will tell all of you what I eventually buy. I'm waiting for the 0% for 60 months to come back.Peace, renik
