short CAI

I have a base Vibe (1zz) and I am planning on buying a cold air intake very soon.Based on all the forums I’ve reviewed, it seems some aftermarket air intakes are resulting in the "check engine light" (CEL) coming on. So far, I’ve read that the TRD CAI results in a CEL but the Injen does not. Has anyone out there installed a K&N Typhoon? If so, are you getting a CEL?Also, based on K&N's website the dyno for the Matrix with a Typhoon, gains 8.7hp. Does anyone how much torque can increase?Finally, would a short air intake, like the Typhoon, result in better performance gains if a hood scoop is also installed to increase air flow to the Typhoon?Thanks!

I have an AEM short ram intake and I have yet to pull a CEL. No complaints what so ever. Their website I believe is http://www.aempower.com, you can check up on the one that I have on the website. It's probably listed for the Matrix, but it's the one I ordered none-the-less.

Welcome to GenVibe, Silver_vibe :DI have a K&N Typhoon installed, been 3 weeks so far and not a single CEL or problem to date!!!Here is a pic of it, if you wanted one:I would recommemend the Typhoon over any other CAI (Since you did mention them, ignore the following if you aren't looking at CAIs): Looks better, performance is excellent and much easier to clean/get to the filter! Then again, I am a little biased However, in K&N's own testing they found that there was no worthy gains to get a CAI over a Short-ram, which is the reason why K&N ONLY makes a Short-ram for the Vibe/Matrix. If there were more gains to be had, they would release a kit to turn the short-ram into a CAI, but as they have said, there's no gains so no reason to do it.I'll try to find the place where I found this info at, or I'll email K&N about it. As for a hood-scoop, cooler air entering the engine would always help, but I am not sure how much the gains would be, w/o a ram-air system. I'm currently looking into this as well, I wish I could get the GT-R hood, or at least find someone to make it for me ... that would be totally *****in'

A scoop of some sort would be a good idea. The problem with a short ram is that it picks up much hotter air from the middle of the engine compartment than the stock system does from just behind a hole in the radiator suport. The higher temperature tends to cancel out the power gain from more airflow. (Power gains are normally measured on a chassis dyno withy the hood open, so the heating effect is much less.)

Based on your feedbacks, I will likely get a short air intake (Leaning toward the K&N, mainly due to their filter)Geo - I know this isn't the GT-R hood, but it's the one I was considering: http://slponline.com/view_product.asp?P ... ER=100192I can't vouch for the dealer since I haven't bought it yet, but it is a clean looking hood (imho). I would rather have a GT-R hood too, if anyone knows where I can get one. Thanks again!
