Gas Mileage...WOW!!

Post by philndz »

If you dont think wind can affect gas mileage that much then get this....I crossed almost the entire state of missouri on thursday afternoon....about 220 miles from school to st. louis. On arrival in St. Louis I had still not used more than a quarter of a tank. I had more than 3/4 of a tank left!!! It was a fairly windy day and the wind was coming from the SW and i was heading East.....It would have been really cool if the wind was a little stronger and coming from the west...man...i could have driven to the East coast of half a tank at that pace.

I drove from my sisters house on Omaha to Iowa City, not sure of the mileage, but brobably around 275. And I did it on a 1/2 tank of gas. And I only had about 5000 miles on my car, so I expect it to get even better as the car breaks in.

'04 Vibe Base 5-speed with 275 miles. The dealer filled the tank at delivery so I do not know if he topped it off or not but the initial tank doesnt look too good. Went about 240 miles and it took 10 gallons to fill it up. Mostly city driving but even still 24 MPG isnt so great. I'm hoping with each successive fills we achieve better mileage.

I almost always getting better mileage than that driving pretty hard around town with my GT engine. On my highway trip to the Northeast Rally this summer, I was getting about 40 MPG while generally traveling at a coasting speed of 80-100 MPH on the highway with the A/C on the whole time. I was amazed. These engines are good on gas.

40 MPG!? That seems unlikely, but if that's really what you're getting, your car is probably out of spec. I've spiked up to 35 or so for a tank, but that can usually be attributed to the gas pump shutting off early in cold weather, or overfilling one tankful followed by normal fill-up. I usually drive 75 - 85 MPH and most of my miles are highway. I've averaged 29.6 MPG over the 16,000 miles on my car - this includes every tank and every mile, not just one trip or select tankfuls. I've become somewhat addicted to 3rd gear and 4th gear lift, so I'm really just tracking this for informational purposes rather than to maximize my fuel economy. I can't believe a car so frugal can be so much fun...

US gov't has a site at http://www.fueleconomy.gov that gives the official MPG ratings on vehicles, recently added the '04 models.Numbers are city/highway in miles per gallonbase 5-speed at 29/36 hwy same for both '03 and '04base auto '03 28/33, '04 now up to 29/34AWD 26/31 hwy, same for both yearsGT '03 25/30, '04 up to 25/32No change in ratings for Matrix from 03 to 04:base 5 speed 29/36base auto 28/33base AWD 26/31XRS (gt) 25/3225 mpg = 9.5 L/100 km29 mpg = 8.1 L/100 km36 mpg = 6.5 L/100 kmI have averaged all the gas and miles on my 5 speed over the last 28K miles, and am averaging about 36.4 mpg. it varies from one tank to the next, which is why I average it.

Most of my great gas milage (over 34 MPG) came from long road trips, but my daily commute is 5 miles surface and 15 miles highway each way.

johnsoax,You drive WAY too easy! I've gotten over 32mpg on the highway driving 70-85mph, but my average tank, I get around 25mpg with mixed city/highway driving, but I rev the sucker, normally, to 3000-4000rpm each shift.
