DC RDS stations?

Post by joatmon »

I commute to near DC, and there are some decent radio stations (like WRNR but I can only pick them up for a short part of the drive). Anyway, I've found some stations that pop up "info" on the stock radio, but I've only ever seen a couple of words, like "WXYZ- more music, less talk" and other useless messages. I thought with RDS the stations could send changing info, like song title/artist and stuff like that. Are there any stations around here that really use RDS that way?

Sometimes I listen to WESM 91.3, on Saturdays they have a good blues program. Most of the time I'm driving their just doing NPR stuff. Never picked up 96 rock or froggy 99, will have to look for them tomorrow.I can also pick up "the X" 102.1 out of Richmond, but I still haven't found a station that sends song title/artist over RDS, at least in such a way that my Vibe radio picks up.

I've been "walking the dial" playing with the stock radio, and found a couple of stations where you can use the auto time update feature by pressing and holding both the hour and minute buttons:97.9 WIYY Baltimore102.1 "The X" Richmond102.7 WQSR DC106.5 WWMX DCAll of these stations have some sort of call letters that show up on the radio, some, but not all turn on the info or traf indicators. Seems like you have to be listening to the station for a minute or two before the time update will work. Sometimes it doesn't seem like it will work at all.WIYY didn't adjust for standard time, so when I got a time update from them, it made my clock one hour fast.

Around here, 96X (out of Norfolk) uses the RDS system. They display song and title, I haven't tried the auto time update. Anybody tried the Traffic thing? Does it just tune you to a station that does traffic updates (but don't all stations do updates), or is there more to it?

I'm in a fringe area and pick up stations from all over. I'll look for 96X, I want to see song title and artist just for the sake of seeing it.. I think that when you tune to a station that broadcasts the proper RDS signal, the radio will display TRAF. If you hit the TRAF button, the radio searches for a station with that signal. I think ideally a station would only put out the TRAF signal when thery were actually doing a traffic report, but they seem to leave it on all the time.Once I was stuck in a bumper to bumper stop and go mess, and when I hit the TRAF button, it scanned and didn't find any TRAF stations and came up with a display "NO TRAFFIC". I wish! If the car could cancel traffic, there'd be a lot more vibers on the road. Or would there? Hmmm .....

An excellent paradox there, joatmon. Here in Pittsburgh, we get a few stations that broadcast call letters over the RDS and that is all. Nothing else. Never found a traffic report yet either as mine does the same thing yours does. This city sucks.

I tuned to 96.1 and picked up 96X, but never saw title/artist. I'll keep trying, maybe they don't do it all the time. I'll also see if I can get 102.9.A couple other features I've been playing with and having no luck are the "program type" and "Alternate Frequency". So far, I haven't been able to get them to do anything. I need to re-read the section in the owners manual. Morning radio sucks. I want to hear music, but all I can get on any station is a bunch of self important DJs jabbering on about trivial stuff. Morning radio in this area is like a daily 4 hour commercial for XM. Time to hit the library for another recorded book.

I broke out my owners manual the other day and started playing around with these features and found that a few stations are broadcasting the RDS info. 102.5 WDVE and 105.9 WXDX (both owned by Clearchannel Radio) are broadcasting RDS that shows frequency, call letters, and song name and artist. It works! Its pretty cool to see this working, I wish more stations would do it. The program type feature works for some radio stations as well, but not many. I guess radio stations have to upgrade their capablities to make these features work. As more and more cars are equipped with RDS, I predict that more stations will broadcast info on it.

I was able to get 96.1 out of Norfolk area to show title/artist one time.Yesterday, I noticed that WWDC 101.1 out of DC is now broadcasting title/artist. At least in the evening. In the morning commute, they are still like all the other formula morning shows with all talk about some mindless topic (this morning it was Paris Hilton), but on the way home the title/artist RDS came through consistently every song. Pretty cool to finally see it work as advertised. I don't know when they started, but it must have been recently.and WIYY still thinks it's EDT instead of EST.

Yeah, I was just going to put in a post about that soon. I just noticed it last week. It's cool being able to see the title and artist scroll across the screen with every song being played. I just wish all radiostations would start doing this.

Yeah, I noticed that DC101 started doing that. So does 98.7 if you like country. I drove back home to Michigan a few weeks ago, and I noticed that through West Virginia, they had a bunch of stations that supplied info. With those stations, the INFO thing actually lit up, and when you pressed the INFO button, you could scroll through Artist, Song Title, and sometimes even Album information. Pretty Sweet. I was just kind of amazed that of all the places where ALL of my Radio functions would work would be through West Virginia.
