I made a huge mistake!!

Post by gedwards »

I just bought a new JVC Arsenal Head Unit to put into my 2004 Vibe w/ Moon & Tunes Package, no Navigation. I took some time taking out the stock radio, looked at my directions from JVC, and thought I needed to cut the wires from the connectors. There was a 24 PIN connector and a 12 PIN connector. Both are now disconnected and I'm left with about 20 different wires that I have no clue how to connect. So here's my dilemma. Do I try to rewire the connectors? Or do I just forget about the stock connectors and rewire everything to the JVC connector? Either way, I don't know which are all the right wires. So if you'll help me complete this list of wires, I may be able to fix my foolish mistake. All I have is from a manual on how to install a subwoofer from some Internet site. Also, any suggestions on what to do next would be helpful.Again I own a 2004 Pontiac Vibe w/ Moon & Tunes Package, no Navigation. Thanks everyone!24 PIN CONNECTORPIN 01 - Blue - ??PIN 02 - Pink - ??PIN 03PIN 04PIN 05PIN 06PIN 07PIN 08 - Pink - Left Front Speaker (+)PIN 09 - Purple - Left Front Speaker (-)PIN 10 - White - Right Rear Speaker (-)PIN 11 - Red - Right Rear Speaker (+)PIN 12 - Brown - Ground ??PIN 13 - Blue with White Stripe - Battery (+)PIN 14 - Grey - ACC (+)PIN 15 - Black - Two Black wires ?? Just Red, Black, Orange, and two White wires. Lost. Can anyone take pictures of their wire connectors? Does anyone know where to find real schematics? Any idea if the brown wire is really ground? I'm so lost.Thanks. -George

quote:I dont know if this helps any: http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=5396 That looks like what I might need, but I don't understand the abbreviations or any color specifications. All I have left is the wires and an empty connector. Every little bit helps, though. Thanks!Any pictures of actual factory connectors? Any other diagrams floating around out there?

The drawing that silverawd26 gave the link for looks like the one from the service manual. It shows the wiring from the radio to the amp, there are some other wires not shown in that diagram that also connect to the stock head unit. The diagram refers to the 24 pin connector as C1, and it labels the pins A1-A12 for the top row, and B1-B12 on the bottom row. If you are looking at the end of the connector (not the side the wires come out) pin A1 is the top left, pinb B12 is the bottom right.A1 A2 A3 A4 A5 A6 A7 A8 A9 A10 A11 A12B1 B2 B3 B4 B5 B6 B7 B8 B9 B10 B11 B12The 12 pin connector is referred to as C2 Looking at the connector end, the pins are labelled:M L K J H GA B C D E FThe diagram at http://users.adelphia.net/~clark288/12207119.jpg shows the numbering of the back of the radio, According to the service manual, the color/function for these wires in the moon&tunes (no Nav) isA1 Not UsedA2 Not usedA3 Not usedA4 Not usedA5 Not usedA6 Not usedA7 Not usedA8 Pink Left Front Speaker Output +A9 Purple Left Front Speaker Output -A10 White Right Rear Speaker Output -A11 Red Right Rear Speaker Output +A12 Brown GroundB1 Blue/Yellow Battery Positive VoltageB2 Gray Ignition Positive VoltageB3 Black Antenna Amplifier Supply VoltageB4 Green LCD Backlighting ControlB5 White/Green LCD Backlighting Dim GroundB6 Black/White Sensitivity ControlB7 Not UsedB8 Black Left Rear Speaker Output +B9 Yellow Left Rear Speaker Output -B10 Blue Right Front Speaker Output -B11 Light Green Right Front Speaker Output +B12 Green Park Lamps InputC2 According to the service manual, with the Moon&Tunes and NO NAV, only pin F White Mute is used, all other pins are marked "Not Used"Blue/Yellow means a mostly blue wire with a yellow stripe

If I understand your question right, I'd definately get a Metra wiring harness that plugs into the larger wiring harness plug on the Vibe. You can wire up/solder/tape up the Metra wiring harness to the JVC harness in a convenient location, rather than up inside your dash.http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=769If you notice a loss of radio reception, especially on am, you may want to wire up your antenna amp. The stock radio harness fed 12v to the antenna amp, but aftermarket radios don't. See: http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=5952I'm not real familiar with the moons & tunes, but I believe the other smaller connector is for the stock cd changer. I MAY BE WRONG. My brain has been a little over taxed lately....Enjoy,Carl

This all helps a ton!! I'm gonna try a few things and I'll let you know if it works. Thanks, everyone. This is so great. I thought I might be doomed forever.By the way, how did you get a copy of the service manual for the moon & tunes vibe? That might be helpful to me if I ever get adventurous again. Thanks!! -George

I bought a service manual off ebay. There were some more recently on there, and (grr) they went for less than what I paid. They don't show up on ebay very often. The Service manual is available for general public purchase from a company called Helm. See http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=4888 for more info. The service manual comes in two volumes, covers all kinds of things about the car,(not just audio). Somewhere between two to three thousand pages.

Well I gave it a shot today. I found out the Blue w White Stripe ( Battery ) should never touch the Brown ( Ground ) while installing the stereo. I ended up blowing a fuse and it's too late to go out and get a new one. I'll let you know tomorrow if things are working once I have a new fuse.By the way, the fuse panel is probably the hardest thing to reach. I think I broke my back trying to get cortorted under the steering wheel and see underneath there. Not a user-friendly place.Later. -George

I hate the location of the fuse block. There's another one under the hood, for different circuits. There are three unused spaces in the fuse block, but they put a fuse in them, I think a 10, 15 and 20. You can use one of those till you can buy replacements.Since you popped the fuse once, you might consider finishing hooking up wires before putting another fuse in.
