Could you build a "stroker" Gt motor?

Post by cohocarl »

Just curious.....From what I've read, the blocks on the base and gt are the same with exception to the Gt has a larger bore, shorter stroke than the base motor. Could you take a base motor's crank & rods and put them into a Gt motor giving it more displacement?Carl

The heads aren't swapable. The 1ZZ heads are made for the longer stroke and the psitons the 1ZZ uses are designed to be used with the 1ZZ head. If you figured out a way to change the 2ZZ crank and rods our for the 1ZZ crank and rods you run into the problem of the pistons coming up and slamming into the the head. You would need the 1ZZ head to make this happen. But that kinda makes it point less. Th blcks are similar but not the same. The cylinder liners are different on both engines and the thinknesses are also different. With what I know about these engine I don't think you can stroke a 2ZZ with 1ZZ parts. Plus the longer stroke on the high reving engine probably wouldn't be a great idea.We have a few Toyota and Pontiac techs as members. Maybe one of them could explain this better than I.

The 2zz bore is actually larger than the 1zz. To make up for the shorter stroke, the 2zz was bored-over giving it a scarce 2 cu.in more displacement than the 1zz. Stroking the 2zz will make it lose it's high rpm advantage. Now stroking the 1zz...that would be interesting...kinda neat idea though! A low-end torque 4 banger....COOL!
