06 Vibe 206K miles oil leak

Post by LSI »

Hi. I had an oil change done recently and for the first time was told there was a top side oil leak and it was a low on oil. What do I need to know about this? Is this the beginning of the end? I do not know much at all about cars under the hood. I would love to have this car last another 100K miles, if possible. If what I have been told signals that it is on its way out, I need to start making plans. Thoughts? Thanks!

The timing chain tensioner is a very common spot for an oil leak on this engine. It's on the top rear right (passenger) side of the engine. It's usually not enough to significantly lower the oil level, though. But it's an easy repair.

Do you park the car in the same spot daily? Is there a visible stain under the car? Can you get under the car to verify the leak? Knowing whether it's dripping off the front, back or which side, or if it's throwing oil all over the engine compartment, will help.

I've had to repair a couple of minor leaks on my '07 with 230K miles, but that was more for cleanliness than curbing consumption.

What trim do you have? If it's a GT then you could possibly have a leak like what I had, where the block, head, and timing cover meet. It was a (removed) to fix BUT has been dry now for over 4 years! I'm at 210K miles now

It's a base trim. There is a small bit of oil on the garage floor on the passenger side.
