My Vibe's getting up there (20 years old and 237k miles) and it might need a new engine and transmission eventually (it's running great right now). Instead of rebuilding or replacing with the same 1.8L engine and 4 speed transmission it has now, I was wondering if it's possible to upgrade to the newer, larger (2.4L?) 2009-2010 engine and 5 speed automatic.
Has it ever been tried? What were the results?
Why not just get a newer Vibe? Simple: I like the looks of the 03-08 models better.

I am not aware of anyone trying this swap. You can do anything if you spend enough time and money. The real question is; is it worth it? Short answer is no.
The 2.4L engine is the base engine in a Toyota Camry. If that engine would have fit into the Gen1 Vibe engine bay, the manufacture would have done it instead of producing a one off engine for the GT model. When the Vibe was redesigned in the Gen2 version, it was made to fit 2.4L into the engine bay. Even in the Gen2 Vibes, the chassis/drive-trains are different between the 1.8L and the 2.4L. Brakes, rotors, hubs, bearings, springs, even the rims are different because of the wheel bolt pattern being different between the 1.8L and 2.4L Gen2 Vibes. If you doubt me, look up the parts for yourself. Then you have the wire looms and harnesses, along with the electrical controls that would have to pulled and switched over.
If you are going to switch out the 1.8L engine to a 2.4L, you may as well but a V-8 engine in it. The amount work it would take would be about the same.
