What Is This Part Called?

Post by cc333 »

I was working on cleaning out years of dirt and crud from under(and inside) the center console when I remembered that provisions exist for a second cigarette lighter-style plug in the storage bin under the arm rest, which would be very nice to have.

However, I can't figure out what it's called, so I can't find it anywhere.

I found a photo of a Toyota Matrix console which has the part I'm asking about (circled in red):

Perhaps it's a feature that the Matrixes (Matrices?) had that the Vibes didn't, so perhaps it's a Toyota part?

It seems that all the wiring is in place, and the hole in the console bin exists (it has a rubber plug installed), so regardless of who made it, once I know what it's called, I should be able to find it, buy it and install it.

Thank you!

P/N82166-01010-Wire $16.26
This is SUPPOSED to be the harness from the chassis wiring harness to the 12vdc socket.
Here are the P/N and prices for the socket and cover.
85530-06010 socket $22.34
85535-02031 cover $7.39
That was 21 years ago, so if Toyota still stocks those parts, the prices will have surely increased.

At this point, you might look for a 03 or 04 Vibe or Matrix at a junkyard. If you find one, you might want to snag the coveted 03/04 double console armrest lid while you're at it.

Or just buy some aftermarket thing and cut/splice the wires

Don't know your year, but both my 2003 and 2005 Matrix's had the extra 12v plug in the center console. Is it not just the same 12v plug/harness that's in the dash? I would think it would be listed as a 12v accessory power outlet or something along those lines. If both 12v+/- wires are there, would a non-OEM one work, as long as it had a cover? Something like THIS?

21 years? Wow, time sure flies! Last I knew, we were proudly driving our new Vibe off the lot!

Anyway, this info gives me a very good place to start! Now I know something about what to look for, at least.

Toyota probably hasn't made/sold these in years (I just discovered today that they (well, GM) no longer carry the 2003-2008 Vibe's A/C condenser, although they have endorsed an aftermarket equivalent that apparently works), so yeah, a junkyard is probably where I'll be most likely to find it (plus online at places like eBay, of course).

I've never liked the stock armrest lid too much (the hard plastic is, well, hard) and the hinges are flimsy and broke many years ago; does the 03-04 double lid have a soft cushion and better hinges, or is it basically the same as the 05+ lid except with an extra compartment or two?

That said, I started searching for the part numbers on eBay just now, and while I didn't find the part number you posted, I did find this one which looks promising, being that it *looks* rather similar, and it's part number is only different by *one* number (82166-02010 on eBay versus 82166-01010 as quoted from Josh):
https://www.ebay.com/itm/127023556116

The listing says it's from a 2003-2008 Corolla, so perhaps 82166-02010 is equivalent to the Matrix part? Given that both the Vibe and Matrix are derived from the 03-08 Corolla, this seems logical to me, but I could be wrong?

I *could* cut and splice an aftermarket thing in (I did that in my old GMC pickup a couple years ago), but I'd rather use stock parts if I can, for reliability's sake if nothing else (plus, it's easier and safer than hacking things up).

The search continues....

Hmm, that might be close enough to OEM that it could work. I'll have to play around with it once I find (or learn how to build a copy of) the harness, but from what little I know of that harness, it would seem that the pins are oriented the same?

Does anyone here have a car equipped with one of these? It seems the 03-08 Matrix or Corolla are most likely to have it as standard equipment, but GM seemingly left it unimplemented for the Vibe for some reason (unless it was available on the GT or something?).

I was fortunate enough to find 03/04 consoles with the plug and harness as well as the double lid in local junkyards to replace the consoles in both my 05 and 08 Vibes. The double lid is padded and way more comfortable than the single. Junk yard or used parts site are probably your best bet.

Very good! I'll look into finding one of those, then.

Aside from the special lid for 03/04 and the apparent absence of the plug and harness in stock Vibe consoles, is the core console the same part across all years of Vibe, Matrix and Corolla?

EDIT: It looks like my hunch may be correct: https://www.ebay.com/itm/296654806178

It even includes the plug and lid!

At that price, I think it may be worth taking a chance. It looks like it ought to fit perfectly (the lid may not be a perfect match color-wise, but who cares? I'll be hidden in the console bin anyway).
