Shifter Cables Source

Hello members. One of my shifter cables broke, and I'm looking for replacements. It seems as if GM no longer makes them. This is for a 2009 GT with the 5 speed manual. Several online GM warehouses came back with unable to find responses. Any ideas? I haven't tried a "stealership" yet.
Other than this issue, the old girl has been running fine.

Does anyone know if the 1.8 5-speed is the same as the 2.4 5-speed? Maybe the first and second gen cars use the same shift cables?

I did some digging on Rockauto and Amazon, but came up with nothing. Best I could find was this on eBay.

Here is a Corolla shift cable for a 1.8L, but I'm not sure if the length is the same.

No. The base model 5 speed uses a different part. I found the last one at a dealership in Maryland and am working on getting it now. GM no longer makes them. Once i get them, I'll go to a Toyota dealer and see if i can find the same part. I'll post up that number once i get it. I was hoping someone already knew the matching Toyota part number. If not I'll try to get it. I'm surprised that it failed so early. 80k miles mostly highway. Ahh well, such is life.

Oh, none of the parts places like Autozone, O'Reilly's, etc have them. No online sites either. If I'm lucky enough to get the GM part from Maryland, I'll use it to compare when I go to Toyota.
Forgive my typos. I'm out and also frustrated.

I understand your frustration Toyota and GM haven't made this type of stuff easy. I hope you can find the equivalent part.

Ebay has some that they say came off of a Corolla, which should be the same as the Matrix.

The cable is on its way from the Maryland dealership. According to them, it's the last one in the country. I wouldn't doubt that. I'll try to take them to Toyota and see if i can get the corresponding part number for the Vibe community. Wish me luck!

Glad you found one. Do NOT throw away your existing one just yet. How did it break in the first place? Hard "slamming" of the gears while shifting? Just simple metal fatigue where something broke? Post pics of the damage if possible. I'm curious for a couple reasons. One I own the exact car/year/engine & tranny as you do and want to be aware that this "could" possibly happen to me as well as others out there. Second, depending on how/where it broke, it likely can be fixed. Having access to almost every possible metal working machine (welders, brakes, lathe, brigeport, milling machines, presses, etc...) there's very little that I would not be able to fix ... or at least attempt to fix. Ok i just joined i have an 09 Pontiac vibe 1.8 manual transmission my transmission blew out the differential in 3 places last month im around Detroit mi area closest one and cheapest was in Canada almost to Niagara Falls only about 650$ 7hr round trip not to bad now one of my shifter cables snapped i have a junkyard in buffalo new York looking i told him there are no new ones in the U.S. told him to start letting his buddies and business partners know about that so they will quit cutting them when they pull the cars apart but you can get new cables from Japan for the matrix they still make the parts for them however there over 500$ for them just letting you know

Hey fellow Vibe-owners!

I've used this forum a few times for sources of information (just changed the clutch out on my 07' vibe BY myself... life changing experience that was... )

So I'm just posting to say in response to "tpollauf" about wanting pictures and info on how buddy's cable broke..

I will be taking pictures and will likely make a new post with aforementioned photos to show what has happened to my vibe as of yesterday... second shift cable snapped clean off right at the tip of where the white plastic cable end is (metal) crimped onto the end of the braided cable under the hood @ the transmission end of things.

Nearly invoked the cost of a tow truck and thank god I was able to get a ride over to my wife with the car where she was, else It'd still be there. Also drove it home a good hour's drive away in 4th gear the whole way (I don't recommend it whatsoever). Needless to say the 1000km break-in period of the clutch I just installed less than 2 weeks ago is likely now null and void! *facepalm*

Um... so yeah to second what Kemo said in October, shifter cables? Pfft... my lord I think you'd have an easier time sourcing aftermarket/oem parts for a bloody model T car from the 1920's than a person would luck out and find some online source or seller of cables. Trying to cross-reference to a matrix or corolla part is a nightmare and dead end in my opinion.

How the hell does a shifter cable snap clean off like that anyways? It's got a rubber boot crimped around the end that broke much like a CV axle has a rubber boot... so it's not like it rusted off? *UPDATE SOON ON THIS*

Banz .... first off, Welcome to GenVibe. Glad you found us and hopefully we can help you keep your Vibe on the road. Well it's been over SIX years since the last known poster had these issues. Hopefully you can give us all a clearer pic and diagnostic as to what is happening to these shifter cables. Again, Mine being 17 years old now and still sitting at just under 50k original miles, may never need this repair done UNLESS there's some type of fatigue happening due to age, and not mileage? Who knows. Also, if yours is the 07 Vibe 1.8l setup, it likely has a completely different cable. Keep us posted
