No crank & it's not the starter

Post by Carly196 »

I have a 2006 base model automatic, and it wouldn't start after filling filling the gas tank. Not even a crank or sound. All dash lights/radio/headlights etc are working fine. Battery is measuring at 12.4v. Electrical to the starter selonoid is 12.4v and was the first thing I replaced. I tried putting it in neutral, & nothing. I'd appreciate all further ideas of what it could be as I'm out of ideas. :(
Thanks.

Welcome to genvibe

You've replaced the starter, which would be the prime suspect, but the odds are really low that a new one would also be bad.

There is a wiring diagram for the starter circuit at download/file.php?id=5873

You said you get 12.4V at the starter solenoid, is that when the key is turned to start? From the wiring diagram, was that the red wire or the black wire?

In the other thread ( viewtopic.php?t=49250 ) you asked about the ignition relay. One way to check that relay is if the wipers work when in the ACC or run position, but stop when you turn the key to Start

Both the starter relay and the ignition relay are in the dash, left of the steering wheel, on the top of the inconveniently placed under dash fuse block. You can access it by pulling out the little storage bin and/or pulling off the air vent/mirror control trim (just pulls out)

Here's a diagram of the parts location on the top of the under dash fuse block.

The starter relay is marked with the red arrow. The ignition relay is labelled as "IG1 Relay" A quick test of the IG1 relay would be to swap it with the power window (P/W) relay next to it. Can't remember, but from the location pic, it looks like the starter relay and the DEF (rear window defroster) relay are the same, so you could try swapping them to see if that has any effect.

I'll try the windshield wiper trick when I get home. I did have a short look at the dash relay area but I need to pull off the dashboard more to really see it. I really appreciate your help with this, as I'm trying to avoid taking her to a shop. Just started a new job and haven't got enough money saved up for that yet.

Okay so the wipers work when key is in ON & when turning to start. Nothing but the radio face lights come on when I turn the key to ACC.
I've removed the vent/mirror control panel to the left of the wheel and I can see what I believe are the relays your talking about. Unfortunately it's pouring rain now and I can't reach them with the door closed so I need to find something to cover me while I work so the electronics don't get wet.

Okay, so I swapped the power window relay with the ignition relay and the windows still work so I'm assuming it's not that. I pulled the big purple starter relay you had the red arrow pointing to in your diagram and tested it with a 9v battery and 2 metal pins and I can hear/feel the switch clicking inside when applying the 9v battery. So if I'm not too cooked from all this, I believe I've got it eliminated down to either the ignition switch behind the keyhole or that my battery isn't having enough power to start the car but is operating the electronics? I honestly can't think of anything else...?

One other unprofessional thing to try is to pull the starter relay, and with the key in the On/Run position, use a paper clip to temporarily jumper the holes in the now empty starter relay socket pins 3 and 5. This should put 12V straight from the battery to the starter solenoid, bypassing all the other relays, park/neutral switch and the ignition switch. be careful not to jumper to pin 2 on the socket or you'll pop the AM2 fuse. If jumpering 3 and 5 engages the starter, then the starter is good and the problem is upstream. If it doesn't, then maybe the starter is bad, not hooked up correctly, bad ground, or some other magic.

Alternatively, you could try putting your finger on the starter relay, and turn the key to start to see if you can feel it click. Not sure if the ignition relay clicks off when you turn key to start, so if you do that and feel a click, try to make sure you're not feeling some other relay in there

I removed the relay and applied a 9v battery to it and felt a click inside it so the relay seems to be groovy.
Sadly it's dumping rain here and I'm tired of working in this weather in the dark, so I've surrendered it to a machanic shop for diagnostic investigation. I'll update with what the helly it is when results are in. Thank you for all your help.
I really miss my car.
