03 AWD Vibe brakes

Post by Moe »

Hi all - new here. Trying to figure the forum out and find info so bear with me.

I’m trying to order brakes rotors and drums for my mother’s 03 Pontiac vibe AWD. Base model. I only see FWD when looking online. I usually go through Detroit axle. I want to order the kit they have for the vibe but it doesn’t specify AWD.

So my question is, is there a difference between the brakes/rotors/drums for the AWD and FWD model? If so, does anyone have any suggestions on where I should look?

Thanks for helping me out. Community seems awesome from all that I have went through so far.

Welcome to genvibe

Looking at the 03 Matrix parts listing at http://www.genvibe.com/images/misc/manu ... atalog.pdf

page 4 of 17 shows only one front rotor, so I assume its the same for AWD, FWD and GT (XRS) but it has the pads for AWD and GT(XRS) and a different one for FWD. When I look on a toyota parts site to see what vehicles those two different pad part numbers fit, I get the same list of vehicles, with no mention of AWD. SO I assume any pads for an 03 will fit

Page 13 of 17 shows the same rear brake drum for both FWD and AWD (GT/XRS has rear disc) but it shows different brake shoes for AWD and FWD. Similarly, a toyota parts site shows the same vehicle applicability for the two different shoe part numbers.

while the parts listing PDF seems to indicate differences between the FWD and AWD variants, toyota parts sites list both but says they all fit the same cars.

So, I think you don't need to worry about a FWD/AWD difference. None of the chain auto parts stores show a FWD/AWD difference n 03 Vibe brake rotors/drums/pads/shoes

Of course, a standard disclaimer, I'm some rando person on the internet, if you buy the parts and they don't fit, sorry, but no money back guarantee on the info above ;)

Haha

Thank you for the detailed response & the claim at the end gave me a good chuckle.

I also came across the same information & when I got to the big auto parts store not including anything about AWD/FWD - that’s where my confusion set in.

I ended up ordering an entire brake kit from parts geek or geek parts or something of the like, with rotors, brakes, drums, springs, etc - I have never ordered from them but they were more detailed than other sites and had “1” kit posted for AWD at a decent price, and then a couple kits for AWD that was priced $75 more - the info lined up & I felt confident ordering either package, which put me further ahead than anywhere else I had looked. Since it’s not an everyday driver, and it’s my mother’s car she drives maybe once a month, I didn’t need anything fancy or long term.

Hopefully it’s correct and once I get it installed, I’ll post some part numbers and maybe it can help out someone in the future.

Thanks again, for taking the time to research and respond, I do appreciate the kindness of a rando trying to help out!

Disc brakes are easy on these cars. Drum brakes are a pain on all cars. The old drum is likely rust welded to the hub by now. Hopefully its not worn enough that you'll have to go in from the backside to unspin the self adjuster.

Digital cameras are great, you can take and instantly see a thousand pictures for free as you take stuff apart so you know how it goes back together, which ai recommend so you can tell where all the drum springs go. Also, make sure the car is secure when you jack it up, we don't want to lose you.

Your mom's lucky to have you looking out for her.
