Dome light replacement

Post by Jamoke2006 »

The switch on my dome light doesn't work very well any more. I have to adjust it to a very specific position to get it to work at all and it flickers a lot. Can I replace the switch? Or the whole unit? What are my options for replacing it? I need it to work properly as there's no proper map lights in my vibe. Or am I out of luck and need to just get handy with a flashlight?

Forgot to include this but I've got the base model of the 2007 Pontiac Vibe.

Doesn't your Vibe have the map lights on the rear view mirror?

My dome light switch is wonky too, but I just leave it off. It's probably dirty/corroded switch contacts. You can try to squirt a drop of WD-40 in there, but only a drop or two--you don't want a drippy mess.

I'd hesitate to try to remove the unit for better access--plastic parts are getting pretty brittle with age. Here's the part: https://www.ebay.com/itm/334903055296 It looks like you pry a spring-loaded clip out. Have a new one ready if you try.

sometimes you can get lucky and wipe the switch contacts clean by repeatedly moving the switch between on and door a hundred times.

good timing, I just replaced my 2 dome light bulbs and cleaned the switch. New led bulbs made a huge difference in light output and then I sprayed electrical contact cleaner in each switch and turned it on and off a bunch of times. Now it works perfectly. The switch just had years of dirt build up in it.

I have a 2007 Vibe with a sunroof and have the same issue but as Andrew mentioned, if you do not have a sunroof, you should have lights on the rear view mirror. Maybe it was replaced so might not be there anymore. If you do have the sunroof, you will have a light next to the slide/tilt for the sunroof. The back seat light is where I have same issue and the contacts are very touchy and I have cleaned them with electronic cleaner. It is better for a while but goes back so I have just taped the switch into position. If you needed that and don't want to mess with the light, there are plenty of inexpensive puck LED lights that are extremely bright and have double sided tape to mount on the ceiling.
