new owner of 06 Vibe w/214K

Post by Fletch614 »

Hey, guys, thought I'd post about my 'new' Vibe since I've spent so much time reading the forum. I needed a car for my soon to be driving teen daughters and didn't want to spend a fortune. My mother's next door neighbor had a Vibe for sale and I bought it. I was a little hesitant at first after I found out the miles...but after a drive, a good look over and an inspection at my local mechanic (needed to get it up in the air) I bought it. Reading this forum and the Toyota Nation Vibe/Matrix forums eased my mind about the reliability and longevity of these funky little cars.

Mechanically good but not so great, cosmetically. I cleaned the motor and detailed the interior before washing the exterior with a high alkaline car wash soap, clayed it, compounded and finish polished it with a DA polisher. Topped it of with hybrid spray wax / ceramic coat. Restored both headlights and replaced the antennae (not shown in pic). Need to wait on restoring the exterior wheel well and side skirt trim as it's been too cold, here.

Wheels will need to be refinished as they are showing some serious corrosion.

Already have a pile of parts waiting for install..valve cover gasket, intake gasket, throttle body gasket, plugs, cam chain tensioner o ring, vvt solenoid o ring, dip stick tube o ring, air filter, cabin air filter, serpentine belt, rear hatch struts, reverse light bulbs, interior bulbs, will also need brake fluid, power steering, coolant and trans fluid replaced. Oil and filter change was first service done. Will need front pads and rotors soon and rear drums will need a good cleaning and ??...

Awesome little car. Love the community and the enthusiasm to keep these things on the road.

Welcome to GenVibe! So where is "too cold" at? Update profile showing us. Great move for any young driver to get the taste & experience of driving. Your kid(s) hopefully thank you and appreciate what you've done for them. Looks like a base model, as it is a rare Vibe without a sunroof. Keep us posted on all progress and improvements. Visit us here often ;)

thanks for the welcome! I'm in the Iowa City, IA, area..Go Hawks! I think starting out with an older car will teach my girls a lot of life lessons. Handing a teen a new Toyota/Jeep/BMW sends the wrong message regarding having to work hard for things in life.

Replaced the pcv valve, cabin air filter, engine air filter and removed and thoroughly cleaned the center console over the weekend. The console has apparently never been removed in 19 years and there were all sorts of disgusting things hiding under there, but it's all clean now.

The car came with the factory Vibe rubber mats in front and I found an unopened bag of cargo area tie downs in the rear storage compartment by the driver side taillight! Surprised no one messed with them or lost them in 19 years.

The front rotors get hotter than I would expect after a short drive..I measured around 150+ with my IR thermometer and they were hot to the touch. I'm thinking stuck slide pins or pads stuck in caliper causing it to get hot. Looks like the front brakes will need attention sooner than later.

Car was owned by original owner, and dealer serviced, for first 175K! Second owner had it for the next ~40K. They at least replaced all 4 struts and 1 caliper, along with the fluids.

Still surprised how inexpensive and readily available most parts are for this car! Lots more work to do with this.

Welcome to the forum, fellow Iowan!
And welcome to Vibes.
They can be addictive.
I did the same thing for my daughter.
Purchased a Frosty White 2003 and fixed everything.
I liked it so much I bought a well optioned Lava Red 2006 AWD for myself after I gave her the '03.
She wrecked the '03 3 times, with the 3rd one taking it off the road.
I found another nice 2006, this one in Stealth Gray, and fixed that one up and gave it to her.
She's had 2 accidents with it now but is still driving it while it is ugly (passenger side smashed in).
I am now working on a Lava Red 2005 for her.
Good thing they are cheap, and I have a good parts supply.
Keep us updated on you Vibe journey.

my thought on buying an older, high mileage car was that my daughter(s) are going to hit something with whatever car they drive...so better an older one! (although now I'm getting pretty attached to this Vibe and hope no harm comes to it)

Welcome to the Vibe Tribe and glad to hear it is working out for you and that you are taking care of it! I purchased a 2008 for my son last March and had the similiar maintenance list. See my post: viewtopic.php?t=48775 and let us know if you have any questions along the way or just keep us posted on the progress.

We were looking for a reliable, safe, affordable first car for my 17 year-old son. I'm a car fanatic, but he's not :( so if he wants to get around- he has to purchase his own car (and manage repairs, and upkeep). I told him I'll help him a little with the cost of the car and insurance (I paid half) and I have a lot of mechanical repair experience (I have 2 lifts in my garage with vintage cars on them, one of which is a turbo rotary engine swap project, and I own many, many tools) but I told him that I will not repair things for him (he has to do the work, and I'll assist him). He and I diagnosed a leaking valve cover gasket, ordered and replaced the part, and as simple as that project was- it was challenging for my son. I had him call a local repair shop to ask them what that repair usually costs, and they said "around $400"- so he's suddenly interested in repairing things himself if possible.

All of his friends have newer luxury cars that their parents financially support. He can buy anything he can afford (and afford to maintain and insure). He's not into cars at all (somehow) so he loves his Vibe (and I do too!) Now if I can just get him interested in solving the roof leak we are experiencing at the moment... I think it's coming from the front roof rack mounting bolts, but neither of us can determine how to remove the cover to access the bolts and seal the area...

Daisy - sounds like you're very well equipped to teach your son about vehicle maintenance! Sounds like we have similar ideas about kids and their first cars. I think I'm more excited about the Vibe than anyone else in my family. My wife hasn't even driven the Vibe and probably never will. Jealous of your lifts, that would be nice! I do like vintage, though. My most ridden motorcycle is 41 years old. Makes the 19 year old Vibe seem like a kid!

Well- the cars I ended up with somehow are (or were) gaining in value and I really treasure them- so it makes way more sense to purchase lifts that allow me to work on and store cars (without spending money on monthly car storage). I could probably sell everything in my garage in a weekend if I needed to (with the exception of my turbo rotary swapped RX7- it's pretty heavily modified...)

Not sure if I can attach a photo, but I'll try:
