Air Vent Knob problem

Post by mmmason23 »

04 vibe. My vent control was stuck, you could only select the left two settings upper vents and both upper and lower vents. I turned it hard enough that it went past, now it won’t go back to the to farthest left two modes. But also, the dial seems to be misaligned now, when it’s on the third setting, lower vent only, its actually upper vent, like the setting is actually on the far left setting. The next setting, defrost and lower, is actually pumping out setting both upper and lower vents like its actually on the second from left setting. And the last defrost only setting is pumping out the third setting, just the lower vents. Any thoughts? Looks like the cable is still attached in behind the radio dash

If it were me, I'd try to disconnect the cable where it attaches to air box flap, then see if the knob or the flap has full range of motion.

The misalignment of the knob might be that the cable sleeve slipped some in its clip when you forced it.

If its the flap that doesn't move like it should, then maybe there's some foreign object in there, but to get to it probably involves taking the top of the dash off

If its the knob doesn't move all the way when the cable is disconnected from the airbox, then it might be a problem with the cable itself, or perhaps the knob, but the HVAC controls are a real hassle to get out

Turned out to be an easy fix, took the panel off. Took the knob off and turned it 45 degrees to the left. All modes are now usable. It doesn’t line up perfectly but it works. Glad it wasn’t something stuck in the vents. Now on to the leaking ceiling(think I fixed) and the dreaded clicking behind the dash. Thanks

Glad to hear you fixed the air vent knob! The leaking ceiling is most likely a clogged sunroof drain and the clicking is of course the actuator door. You might already know these but figured I'd share. There are plenty of previous posts and other info about both of these common problems.
