Can I switch all 4 car tires on my own as a total beginner?

Post by jasoki »

Hi all,

I have a 09 Vibe GT which is still going strong. It has around 112K miles and I plan on keeping it as long as possible. My front tires treads are finally on its last leg and I want to replace all 4 tires together.

I really want to save money but also want good value quality tires that'll last me another couple of years running 40K - 50K more.

I have a couple of questions about this.

1. I am thinking about getting tires from Costco. Is that alright?
2. They have these options. Which one would you go for? I'm in Pacific Northwest area.

3. As a total noob, can I switch these tires on my own watching Youtube videos? Or shoudl I just let pros do it?

Thank you for your advice.

Do you mean physically pulling the tires off the rim then re-mounting new tires? Considering you're asking that question, I'm just going to assume you don't have access to a tire-mounting/balancing machine. Just let the pros do it.

1. Should be no problem buying them from Costco. I haven't, but have a relative who road trips a lot, and he always buys tires from Walmart, and gets their road hazard warranty, because pretty much wherever he drives, there a walmart nearby if he has a tire problem.

2. The last time I bought tires, I used the website TireRack You can put in your vehicle or desired tire size, and select multiple candidates to compare, then see them rated side by side for things like dry/snow performance, treadwear, etc. Then go price shopping for whoever has the best price for the ones you like. I haven't, but you can buy them from tirerack and have them shipped to an installer. I didn't do a comparison on the ones you posted ( and congrats on posting a picture, some folks haven't figured that out)

3. No. Almost nobody can.

Wow Walmart ones are super cheap. Many under 100 bucks

Do you guys have a tire recommendation?

I just want some reliable safe tires for my 09 Vibe. Nothing special. Obviously not gonna race. Just need to handle some rainy Seattle weather.

I'm a cheapa**, so out of those you have pictured, would do the BFG's for $680/set. They all have 45k warranty, except the Bridgestones. But is it really worth another $116/set for another 5k warranty?

Tbh, if you want to be super cheap, WalMart has some tires as low as $60/each, but of course you will sacrifice some of your warranty period. That's what I did when I sold my Xrs but it desperately needed tires still.

Check out walmart. Goodyear Assurance tires if $$ is an issue...
Ive got the old version of Goodyear Reliant which is no longer available, other than being noisy, they are OK.
Costco tires are pretty good ....
