another turn signal relay problem=-

Post by jamesmetairie »

05, base model. same symptoms as a fellow Viber about a year ago.
Drivers turn signal hyper flashes occasionally. Not always. It,s been happening for a few days on and off. question= where is the relay located. Is a relay the same as years ago was called a "flasher"? would it be smart to just change it now and include some electrical grease? and hope that solves the problem .

I'd first check for corrosion at the bulb sockets.

You actually use your turn signal? You're one of the few. :D

I agree. The hyoerflash is a feature of the flasher relay, it senses there is not enough current draw from the lights and flashes fast to let you know you likely have a burned out bulb somewhere. An issue for people who switched to LED bulbs, which draw less juice, but that's not your issue.

Since it happens intermittently, you could have a bad connection somewhere. It also could be one bulb that has a broken filament, sometimes it flops correctly to hit make a connection, other times it doesn't. Might not be a convenient thing to do, but if you can, the next time it goes hyperflash, pull over, put it in park with the lights flashing, get out and see which light is out. Or you could replace the bulbs

I wouldn't expect the flasher relay itself to be a problem with those symptoms. It could be, but a bad bulb or other intermittent connection would be much more likely

weird science, for me anyway lol
It,s the driver , rear turn signal. I pulled the bulb. It was not burned black. I twisted it and repluged it in to receptacle. It worked for a few minutes . then started hyper flashing again. Today I swapped the drivers bulb to the passenger bulb. It,s working in the carport. We,ll see what develops.

BTW= should any kind of burnt out or failed blub show some blackness or darkness?

I don't think I ever had a turn signal bulb go out on a vibe, but i went through a lot of headlight bulbs, and none of those that failed showed any blackness or darkness. Sometimes the thin wire filament just breaks. In household incandescent light bulbs, the failure mode seemed to be the filament would burn up and scorch the inside instead of just breaking, and I guess that could happen in an automotive bulb, but my experience was they just stopped working, and close inspection sometimes (but not always) showed a broken wire inside.

Might be worth it to just buy a new bulb, in case it continues to act up. I think the rear turn signal bulbs are # 7440's. According to the interweb, you can get a pair at walmart for $6 ( https://www.walmart.com/ip/SYLVANIA-744 ... 5098228008 )

update= yesterday I swapped the rear turn signal bulbs this side to that side. I did a lot of driving around last night. All was fine.

BTW= thanks for the Walmart bulb idea. That,s a big difference from the auto parts stores prices I saw.
