Can you get to the speaker wires....

Post by YoYo »

Coming out of the head unit easy? What I'm thinking I'd like to do is put a component 6 1/2 + tweeter combo in the front doors (mounting the tweeters on the lil space inside where the side mirror mounts. And put a pair of 6 1/2 subs in the rear doors. Then put crossovers for these under the dash by intercepting the wires coming out of the head unit. But if these wires are a pain in the (removed) to find/mess with - then thats an issue.Any ideas/thoughts?

Yes, everything should be pretty easy. Here's a few links that may help if you haven't seen them yet.:Speaker install:http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=785Head unit install:http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=769&page=1I can't find the link right now, but there's a link to a .pdf file for the pin-outs on the wiring harness to tell you what wires are what. If I can find it, I'll post it also.If you are going to install an aftermarket h.u. also, you may want to pick up a Metra wiring harness and do all your wire splicing on that rather than the original wiring harness. Much easier to solder up connections on your workbench than up inside your dashboard...

Right. What cohocarl said. Really, the ONLY place you can access the wiring is where it exits the radio. Beyond that, it merges with tons of other wires and runs off, never to be seen again. As for mounting stuff under the dash, good luck, it's pretty tight in there as it is. If you pull it off, be sure to get pictures!

http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=6057&page=2See there. About 3/4 of the way down are pictures of how I put my components in.I mounted my crossovers in the door, bypassed any other wiring mess. As for attatching to the speaker wires after the radio, it IS possible. There are harnesses that connect before the doors, the front doors are under that little kickpanel, and the back doors are in the B columns. You can ID the wires by matching the colors of the wires in the door. It's pretty easy.I just cut the stock stuff off in the doors and did the wiring that way. When I put in my amp, I cut the wires heading to the doors at the harnesses, spliced in, and was set. If you want, I can get pictures and which colors the wires are.PM me is best, as I'm somewhat spastic about looking at posts..

Thanks for all the help - espcially the pictures of the installs. I think I'll just mount the front crossovers like jahntassa did on the doors. For the rear speakers, I'm still gonna try some small woofers - but I think I'll put in an amp under the pass. seat (like the moon/toons has) and put the crossovers there. I *hoping* that maybe GM does a standard wiring harness and maybe puts wiring there for the optional amp even if you dont get the amp option. That would make it way easy. If not, I'll have to dig round on the back of the head-unit and find the RCA outs (I sure hope there are some there - I dont want to replace head unit).I'll take some pictures as a I go.

To get to my speaker wires all I did was take of the side panel behind the passenger door below where the seat belt thing is.

Thanks for the tip! If I don't do the amp on my first pass, I can put the crossover for the rear woofers in there.

However, I don't know if that wiring harness exists.. I have the NAV system with the CD Changer under the passenger seat.. You'd probably need to take out the seat and pull up the carpet a little in order to see.
