Water pump: O-ring and gasket or just o-ring?

I have a 2007 Vibe that I need to replace the water pump on. I've watched several videos on the process, but I am confused because in about half the videos, they used the o-ring and a gasket, but in the others they only used the o-ring alone with no other gasket or sealant. So, which is correct? Does it matter? Is there some advantage to doing it one way or the other?

I have not replaced it on a 1ZZ, but I am pretty sure it's just an o-ring

I just checked on the Toyota parts website and there's only on O-ring listed.

I replaced my 3 years ago and I dont recall a gasket. Just O ring.

The 03 Matrix service manual only mentions an O ring, no gasket
