Now in work on my sewing machine is a washable carrier that holds a foam pad that attaches to the rear headrest and will protect either the back seat and floor or the cargo area if seats folded down when I carry my dog (English Springer Spaniel) That way I won't need to constantly be vacuuming and brushing the upholstery and can feel good about taking her for rides. I will let you know how it works and will include pictures later.

I see that pictures have yet to be posted for the dog cover. I have a big dog who seems to shed a lot when he gets in the car and have come up with something I didn't have to sew. I went to a home improvement store/hardware store (I don't want to favor either type of store here) and purchased one of those nice canvas painting tarps. I put it over the seats and cover the floor and then tuck it in where I can get it to fit. This works GREAT because when we get home from running around, all I have to do is pull it out of the car and wash it or shake it off.If I have to put my dog all the way in the back, I put a flat, foam-filled pet bed down under the tarp to give him some cushioning.Hope this info helps dog owners.

I just use a bed sheet on the rear drivers side seat. My dog is good enough that she will stay on the bed sheet. Now if I could only keep her from getting car sick Currently my wife rides in the back with her and places a plastic bag over the dog's snout when she is getting sick.
quote:What size canvas tarp did you purchase?Let me look tonight when I get home and get back to you.Okay...I just got back from taking my dog for our weekend run around the park. The size tarp I am using is 6-feet by 9-feet. I have a 12x15 foot one I use when I fold down the seats. I have been known to use these tarps for hauling bags of mulch, soil, plants, etc.quote:I just use a bed sheet on the rear drivers side seat. One good thing I have noticed about these canvas tarps is that they can be washed and, wet stuff doesn't seep through them like it does with a bed sheet. My dog loves to play in the water, so sometimes we have to deal with a little wetness in the car. The tarp works great for these situations. You know, you might talk to your vet about the car sickness...they have stuff for humans, maybe they have something to help your dog?!

I know people who give regular old gravol to their dogs to avoid the car sickness problem. They just use a dosage that is suitable for kids about the same weight as the dog. Another option is to have the dog in the front seat. Some people get car sick in the back but are fine in the front, maybe it's the same for dogs!
