2010 Vibe 2.4 Li Front Wiper Problems

Post by HPilot »

My front wipers started acting up. The wipers do not start moving no matter where the wiper switch is placed. Fuses and relays check okay.
I noticed that if I give the wiper blades a bit of a tug once the car is started, the wipers will work, but only in low. Intermittent will not work.
Seems like once the wiper is parked they don't want to start up.
Also greased up the linkage.
Cleaned up the wiper switch contacts but was not able to further diagnose if this switch is faulty, due to the circuit board involved.
Will be checking the motor to see if it needs repacking with grease and if it goes thru it's speeds by applying voltage directly. Not sure if there are any circuit opponents in the wiper motor?
Any way to determine if the fault is in the switch or the motor?

You can pull the wiper switch out and then short the pins to see if you get instant action. Check the electrical connections to the wiper motor for corrosion and dirt. If none of that helps, then I would try replacing the wiper motor. OE replacement motors are pretty cheap on rockauto.

If the wiper switch is dead, I have a spare that I can send you for the cost of shipping. It's the one I swapped out of my 2009 for a variable intermittent control.

Thanks for the reply.
I took the switch out and tried to get continuity tests done on the small wire plug.
The only side that would short out is the rear motor/ washer part of the switch.
This is also the side that works, so that makes sense.
In the larger wire plug I couldn't get any of the pins to short out no matter where I turned
the switch. Kinda thinking that the small circuit board may have something to do with that.I would guess that the board has something to do with "intermittent" functions.
Odd thing though, once I start car the wipers will work, with exception of high speed.
However If I give the blade(s) a light tug they start working. If I shut the wipers off they again do not start up.
So I'm learning about the park position and wondering why the wipers do not come out of park?
I guess the plan is to pull the wiper motor and throw some voltage on the pins to see if I can get all the speeds working, including going into and out of park.
Are there any circuit boards in the motor?

Finally found the problem that I would like to pass on.
The wire connector plug going into wiper motor is susceptible to letting
water in. It lies under the motor. After taking the motor apart it was evident that there was corrosion and dirt in the mechanism.
As I was cleaning the contacts I broke one lead of the small capacitors, there are two in there. Fortunately I had a cap that was close and I used that.
After cleaning up the contacts etc and re- greasing the worm screw things fired
up and ran okay.
Hope this helps someone out there.
Thanks to responses.
