Installing DashCam in Rear windows of 2005 Vibe 12V ?

Post by naimc »

I have been using a A118C for about 1 year and purchased a second unit to install on the back hatch near the wiper motor.

Wishfull thinking had me convinced I would find a constant 12V source near the rear wiper motor but I spent a bit of time with my multi-meter and did not find 12V source. I only found an intermittent 12V when the back wiper is working.

Any suggestions ?

I can't think of anything in the rear door or even at the rear of the vehicle that has 12V constant when the ignition is on. Unless you want to have the parking lights on all the time, then you could use the license plate light 12V line.

The only other option is to run 12V switched power from the driver's side fuse box, under the door sills, through the trunk under the storage compartments and spare tire, up the D pillar, through the flexible conduit, and into the door. If you do all that, you should at the same time run a video cable from the A118C to the front in case you want to use it as a backup camera in the future, since the A118C has an 1/8" AV output. This is the cable you would need. https://www.amazon.com/Screen-Audio-Vid ... B008R39FKS

Are you referring to flexible conduit on top of hatch as my picture ?

If yes would it not be simpler to remove part of the roof liner and fish a power cable from up the front side driver pillar ( same as my existing power cable for front cam. then into the Flxible conduit. I have not removed the break light but I am assuming I could pull my cable to it, exit and I would mount the camera on the side of break light on a bracket so I can still open the glass hatch. Just have to remove that old parking decal.

Dropping the headliner is a big deal, because you have to pull off all the pillar trim to do it. Although, I had to repair the antenna on my 1st gen years ago, and I was able to drop the headliner just enough at the top of the rear hatch so I could get a socket wrench on the bottom of the antenna.

Keep in mind that the roof above the headliner has lots of obstacles in the form of structural ribs, so running wire can be tricky. And creasing the headliner is another risk if you bend it too far.
