Slight hissing noise when blipping throttle.

Post by anusornsan »

Hi everyone, new to the forums. I recently picked up a 2004 vibe base 2wd - and have been doing a lot of maintenance on it since it has almost 200k miles on it.

I replaced the header gasket this weekend - since i could see oil was leaking out the area. Cleaned the throttle body while I was at it as well - and the car is running better and doesn't idle as high as it used to on cold startup. So everything seems to be fine and dandy. However, I noticed that if I blipped the throttle really quickly, I can hear a hissing sound coming from the general header gasket (i think). I don't really know if it was doing this prior to my gasket replacement. Is this normal? I'm assuming it's not but I wanted to check to see before I took it all apart again and looked at the gasket.

I have a video of it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDXQRYVuRH4

Are you sure it's coming from around the gasket? That sounds like a suction sound. I don't have the 1zz, but I'll be out later and see if can catch the sound myself on the 2zz. Does the sound get louder if you put your ear by the throttle body when you do it?

Can you feel or with using something, see any air leak from around the gasket? You can try really soapy water around the gasket, (don't do it when it's hot) and see if there are any bubbles being made indicating a leak.

Thank you for the soap suggestion! I'll probably try the soap idea this weekend. I don't think the sound gets any louder and it's not there on slower/normal acceleration - only when i blip it -- so now that I think about it, you're probably right that it's just a normal sucking down. Would super appreciate it if you can see if you can replicate it because it could just be normal and I'm overthinking it. Thanks!

Ahh!!! I totally forgot to check my car. I'll write myself a little note today and try to get to it and let you know.

That is the sound of air rushing by the throttle plate.
Does this have the stock intake system (air filter box etc.)?
I remember as a kid in the '60s and the sound of a V8 sucking through a 4-barrell carb. CHA-Vroom!!
