New starter won't disengage

Post by Frustrated »

I have a 2004 Vibe. Wouldn't start. Long story short, put in a new starter, still wouldn't start. Finally found the AM2 fuse under the dash was blown. Replaced it, car fires up, but the starter will not disengage. Please help!

Anything unusual when you put the starter in, binding, bolts bottoming out. Do you have the part number of the starter you installed?

The Vibe does not use any starter shims, either the starter is defective, or their is other damage. When I replaced mine the starter fit snug, it is possible that although the bolts are tight it may not have seated squarely. Check to see if the starter is touching the bell housing all they way around. See if the trigger wire to the solenoid drops back to 0v. If it stays 12v after you release the key you have a wiring issue. If line up and wiring are good, suggest taking starter back to autozone for testing to see if the bendix spins out and releases. If it does, then may have an issue with the flywheel.
