Well I'm not convinced you can really have both. If you want cheap then get a rope, practice your knots and go for it. Be careful of dangling ropes that can easily harm the thin paint though. If you want security and quick on/off then you'll probably have to go with a commercial rack like Yakima or Tule. And they certainly aren't cheap. Both have good websites with lots of info. You can get adapters that will allow you to attach the ski holders directly to your factory racks. If you search for racks in the forums here you should find plenty more about carrying various items on the roof, from bikes to skis to boats.Often stores that rent racks only use them for one season then sell them off and you can get a good deal. Also, you can check with auto wreckers for cars that have been brought in with racks on them (the wreckers usually have little idea of how much these things are worth so are glad to get rid of them fairly cheaply). I have a friend who got two Yakima bike trays that way, at about 1/5 the price of new ones. Might be tough to get parts for a Vibe though since it's so new.
I did some research tonight and realize they (Thule and Yakima) have adapters for factory crossbars. All together comes in under $100 with the upcoming REI sale. Not bad. Locks are another $10 or $20, but I've never been convinced the ones on their bike racks are adequate.
