Summary of normal rusty areas?

Post by bikes1 »

As in, is there one or is there any consensus on what is normal rust for a 2005 Vibe? Base model here.

I got mine two years ago, finally got around to taking care of the outside, chasing down rust.

So far I have found rust under the black front door sill plates, just from trapped salt I think, rust under the rear window along the gasket and under the gasket and rust streaks coming from both rear door handles. I'll have a look at those tomorrow, take advantage of our great weather in Ontario.

I pulled the rear license plate and found some rust around the plate bolt holes also.

I have rusty spots from stone chips that were never dealt with, normal wear and tear there.

Other than that, are there any known areas that I should be looking at? I've been under the car and it looks great, flushed water through most every hole I could find in any frame member and didn't get any dirt or salt coming out so I assume it's all good there.

Oh, I did pull back the front inner fender liners at the rear bottom and found a nice bunch of wet leaves and some sand
in there. Flushed the hell outta the area and it looks good now.

Cheers

Door hinges at wear points.

On the 2nd gen, I've found:
the brackets that hold the front exhaust support as it leads to the down pipe up front.
Also all the bolts holding on the front exhaust shielding under the hood, and if unchecked migrating into the shield.
The oil dipstick

I live in an area where road salt is used about 5 months out of the year. The visible sheet metal seems to stay rust free. Found most rust at edges, seams, and brackets. Found some rust bubbles starting along weather stripping throughout the car, under the sill plate on the driver side (collected gunk that scratched paint). I found some starting under the mirror and roof rack mounts. Looking inside the doors the bottom edge has some rust bubbles from water getting trapped inside the doors. Under the car, trany line near the radiator, most of the small support brackets holding brake, power steering, and fuel lines. The brake lines show no rust, GM/Toyota did a great job of putting money toward coating the brake lines, but the trany lines shows a lot of surface scale and rust. On the rear driver side wheel well, remove the plastic panel, you will likely find rusty brackets and dirt around your fuel fill and vent pipe. Some of the muffler mount brackets and hardware holding heat shields in place have rust due to constantly being steamed. If you are the 2nd owner of the Vibe check under the floor carpeting to see if previous owner(s) spilled drinks or let water lay, causing floor pan rust. Also found hidden pockets in the frame sections that start to rust. Working on many vehicles over 20 years, seems small brackets and mounting hardware are the first things to go, which leads to rattles and squeaks as attached items start breaking free. Vibe seems to continue that trend.
